DATE: July 1986
SUBJECT:
A. RIVETED CONNECTING LINK FOR TIMING CHAIN ENGINES 102 AND 103
B. NOTCHED ROLLER CHAIN ENGINE 102 (EXCEPT 102.983)
A. Riveted Connecting Link For Timing Chain, Engines 102 and 103
A riveted connecting link is to be used when replacing the timing chain on engines with profiled tensioning rail linings (B, Figure 1).
The profiled tensioning rail lining has been installed on engine 102.983 since the start of production and will be phased into production on other 102 engines.
On 103 engines, only the riveted connecting link is to be used.
The previous version connecting link with snap rings (A, Figure 2) can be used up on 102 engines with flat tensioning rail linings.
Procedure
1. Cover timing chain case with clean shop rag.
2. Position plate (arrow) on removable magnetic block (02, Figure 3).
3. Place bridge (arrow, Figure 4) on both rollers of connecting link so that the heads of the connecting link pins sit in the slot (c) ensuring proper positioning of the pins into the bores of the plate.
4. Tighten spindle (04, Figure 4) with a box wrench until firm resistance is felt.
5. Remove assembly tool 000 589 58 43 00 position removeable block
(02, Figure 5) so that groove (D) faces inward (see Figure 5).
6. Position assembly tool and individually rivet both pins by tightening spindle to 30 Nm.
7. Check rivets (Arrows, Figure 6). Re-rivet if necessary.
B. Notched Roller Chain Engine 102 (Except 102.983)
As of November 1985 production, a notched roller chain, for improved lubrication of the rollers, has been installed on the above mentioned engine.
