Replacing Lower Guide Rail

NOTE The guide rails have changed with the introduction of the double roller chain.

LOWER GUIDE RAIL REPLACEMENT
- Remove Cylinder Head Cover.
- Remove Oil Pan.
- Remove Timing Case Cover





With single roller chain
- Pull off guide rail (25).

With double roller chain





- Position piston of No. 1 cylinder on ignitior TDC.





- Unbolt oil pressure pump (arrows) and put to one side with lines connected.





- Remove chain tensioner.





- Mark timing chain and crankshaft gear relative to each other.





- Mark timing chain and camshaft timing gear relative to each other.
- Unbolt camshaft timing gear and remove gear.
- Lay timing chain in timing case.





- Unscrew bolt (20) and remove retaining clip (19).





- Pull out timing chain and remove idler gear shaft (18).





- Pull timing chain and crankshaft gear forward as far as possible and remove guide rail (25b).
- Install guide rail and push back crankshaft gear together with timing chain.

NOTE When pushing back the crankshaft gear, note the positioning pin in the camshaft timing gear flange and the marking.





- Install idler gear shaft and tighten the hexagonal socket screw (20)
^ Tightening torque: 5 Nm (3.7 ft lbs) (reference value).





- Install timing chain and camshaft timing gear, note marking. Tightening torque: 80 Nm (59 ft lbs).





- Install chain tensioner.
^ Tightening torque of sealing plug (40), 70 Nm (52 ft lbs).





- Check adjustment marking of camshaft (arrow) at ignition TDC position of engine, correct if necessary.





- Install oil pressure pump, in so doing note driving disc.
- The remaining installation is the reverse of removal.
- Check for leaks when engine is running.
