Guide Rail In Cylinder Head




Reference Image for procedure.





NOTE The guide rails have been changed with the introduction of the double roller chain.

CYLINDER HEAD GUIDE RAIL REPLACEMENT
- Remove cylinder head cover.
- Unbolt alternator and lay aside.





- Remove timing chain tensioner.
^ Tightening torque of hexagon cap nut (40) 70 Nm (52 ft lbs).





- Remove fan shroud (1) and fan (75).
^ Tightening torque of bolt (80): 25 Nm (18.5 ft lbs).





- Position piston of No. 1 cylinder on ignition TDC.





- Unbolt oil pressure pump (if equipped) with lines connected (arrows) and set to one side.





- Mark timing chain and camshaft timing gear relative to each other.
- Unbolt camshaft timing gear and remove sprocket.

NOTE When installing the sprocket note markings.
^ Tightening torque of set bolt 80 Nm (59 ft lbs).









- Withdraw both guide rail bolts (26) with impact extractor 116 589 20 33 00 and stud 100 589 003 400.

NOTE If the guide rail bolts are too tight, the extractor 115 589 203 300 with stud 115 589 003 400 can also be used.

INSTALLATION
- Install in reverse order of removal.





- Install guide rail (24) so that the locating lug (arrow) engages in the groove of the upper guide rail bolt.

NOTE Apply sealant 001 989 25 20 at collar of guide rail bolts.

- Check for leaks when engine is running.
