Cause:
If the camshaft and rocker arm (wear) or hydraulic compensating elements can be eliminated as the source, the noise may be caused by the exhaust valve springs or valve spring retainers contacting the cylinder head cover.
Remedy:
Remove cylinder head cover. Inspect inside of cover for contact marks. Install modified cylinder head cover, part no. 102 010 35 30, if necessary.
