Whistling or Knocking Noise, Difficult Shifting
03-89011 Whistling Noise from Belt Drive and/or Engine 102 Revised 1/91 1/89Knocking Noise from Crankshaft Area. Noise
May increase with Clutch Pedal Depressed.
Difficult Shifting with Manual Transmission
Cause:
In vehicles within the Effective Serial Number Range below, the one-piece thrust washers (B) on crankshaft bearing 3 are worn or have fallen out.
Remedy:
Measure end play of crankshaft with gauge. If end play is greater than 0.2 mm, remove oil pan. Remove bearing cap from crankshaft bearing 3. Press-out the one-piece thrust washer (B) from bearing 3. Check bearing surface of thrust washer for wear.
^ If oil pockets are visible on the thrust washers, install two-piece washer (A, p/n 102 030 05 62). Two sets are required for each engine.
^ If oil pockets are no longer visible on the thrust washers, replace crankshaft and crankshaft connecting rod bearing inserts. If the thrust washers have fallen out of the crankshaft bearing, replace short block (Regional approval required).
Note:
On rebuilt or exchange engines with two-piece thrust washer, stamp the letter "A" on the mating surface next to the temperature sensor, similar to the stamp for engines with chilled cast iron camshafts (see S.I. MBNA 05/3, 18/7).
If the crankshaft was replaced replace engine oil and filter.
Effective Serial Number Range
Note:
Earlier model vehicles with engines listed above can also be affected if a rebuilt or exchange engine was installed between 01/88 and approximately 06/88.
