Parallel support





1 Position bearing race (7) on the tapered roller bearing of output shaft (8).
2 Pre-tension bearing race (7) with two clamping bars (9) at two opposite places.





3 Measure the distance (a) between the bearing race (7) and the housing cover (10) at two opposite places using a depth gauge (11).
4 Calculate the mean value from both measurements: a = (a1 + a2) : 2

Example:
a = (4.1 mm + 3.9 mm) : 2
a = 4.0 mm

5 Remove clamping bars.





6 Fit new gasket (5) to bearing cap (4).
7 Place two parallel gauges (12) on the seal (5).
8 Measure the distance (b) between the top of the parallel gauges (12) and the contact surface of the bearing race using a depth gauge (11).
9 Measure height (c) of the parallel gauges (12).
10 Work out the distance (d) between the seal (5) and the contact surface of the bearing race:

d = b - c
Example:
d = 19.34 mm - 15.10 mm
d = 4.24 mm

11 Work out the existing play without shim:
Existing play = d - a
Example:
Existing play = 4.24 mm - 4.0 mm
Existing play = 0.24 mm

12 Work out the target thickness of the shim:
Target thickness = existing play + specified pretension
Minimum thickness = existing play + 0.0 mm
Maximum thickness = existing play + 0.1 mm
Example:
Minimum thickness = 0.24 mm + 0.0 mm = 0.24 mm
Maximum thickness = 0.24 mm + 0.1 mm = 0.34 mm

13 Select required shim.
Shims are available in the following sizes:
^ 0.05 mm
^ 0.10 mm
^ 0.15 mm
^ 0.30 mm
^ 0.50 mm.
The maximum pretensions should be sought.

Example:
Minimum thickness = 0.24 mm
Maximum thickness = 0.34 mm
Required thickness of the shim for this example: 0.30 mm
