An impact wrench/driver or compressed-air tool must not be used when pulling out and tightening the bolts. Otherwise the torque converter drive plate's threaded inserts may be damaged.

Unbolt

1 Remove cover (9) from access opening of transmission.
2 Fit counterholder (10) to belt pulley/ vibration damper, and turn crankshaft far enough in direction of engine rotation until the bolts (1, 2) of the torque converter (8) are visible at the access opening.
3 Remove bolts (1, 2).

For vehicles without code (MJ7) ECO start, have the crankshaft held by an assistant using the counterholder (10). For vehicles with code (MJ7) ECO start the retaining lock is to be inserted at the flywheel ring gear.

4 Remove remaining bolts (1, 2) in the same manner.

The torque converter (8) is fastened in place with two bolts (1, 2) each at three points of the torque converter drive plate.

The mounted bolts (1, 2) are each offset by approx. 120°.

Checking

5 Check threaded inserts (arrows) in the drive plate (7) for damage and loose seat, replace drive plate (7) if necessary.

Bolting on

6 Align drive plate (7) and torque converter (8) with each other.
7 Use a suitable tool to press the torque converter (8) up against the torque converter drive plate (7), screw in the bolt (1) manually and tighten to 1st stage tightening torque.

Replace bolt (1).

8 Screw in remaining bolts (2 up to 6) manually and tighten as per the 1st stage tightening torque.

Replace bolts (2 to 6).

9 Tighten bolts (1 to 6) as per the 2nd stage tightening torque.

For vehicles without code (MJ7) ECO start, have the crankshaft held by an assistant using the counterholder (10). For vehicles with code (MJ7) ECO start, block the crankshaft using the retaining lock.

10 Tighten bolts (1 to 6) as per the 3rd stage tightening torque.

For vehicles without code (MJ7) ECO start, have the crankshaft held by an assistant using the counterholder (10). For vehicles with code (MJ7) ECO start, block the crankshaft using the retaining lock.

11 Fit covering to transmission access opening.
