Task

The center shifter console is the central control element for the driver to influence the automatic transmission shift program.

The center shifter console is comprised of the following components:

^ Selector lever
^ Return spring
^ Spring of shift detent mechanism
^ Connection for ignition lock cable
^ Shift pattern display
^ R/P locking solenoid
^ Lever for Shift-Lock-Override
^ Selector lever handle
^ Flap for Shift-Lock-Override
^ Touch shift module ±
^ R/P-lock return spring
^ EWM control unit

Function

The selector lever is moved and positioned in the shift gate, which is not visible to the driver. All the selector lever positions are detected by the ESM [EWM] control unit, coded and transmitted via the Controller Area Network-bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C) to the EGS control unit (N15/3).

At the same time, selector lever positions "P", "R", "N" and "D" are passed on mechanically to the range selector lever at the transmission end by means of a shift rod.

Shift ranges "1", "2", "3" and "4", up to the those which the electronic transmission control (EGS) permits an upshift of the automatic transmission, can be engaged by sideways movement of the selector lever into selector lever position "D" (touch shift).
