Function

When the oil level is low the lubricating oil constantly escaping from the gear set flows back through the opening into the oil chamber. If the oil level increases, the oil presses the float against the housing.

As a result the float separates the oil chamber from the gear set chamber. The lubricating oil escaping further from the gear sets is thrown against the housing wall, carried along by the rotating parts and flows back through the upper opening (arrow) into the oil gallery.
