AR32.25-W-0121-02A Check Shock Absorbers For Leaks
The test must not be carried out after driving in the rain or through a vehicle wash as the shock absorbers must be dry.
1 Carry out visual inspection.
It is possible for a shock absorber to appear to be leaking when it is actually intact. Visible oil mist condensing on the main tube (arrow) is acceptable.
Shock absorber OK.
2 In case of doubt, detach the shock absorber from its bottom mounting and pull out the tube.
The shock absorber is in order if there is no grease or oil present beneath the outer guard tube.
There is a leak if:
- the reservoir tube is covered with oil over a large area.
- a finger is moistened by oil when the shock absorber is dabbed.
- a glossy oil or dirt film or oil droplets form on the reservoir tube after the finger test.
- after pulling apart the shock absorber the oil film can also be found in the upper area of the reservoir tube (otherwise the oil does not originate from the shock absorber, possibly from the engine, transmission or rear axle).
The vehicle must be at the vehicle level when screwing on firmly the bolted connection of the shock absorber.
Shock absorber OK.
(shock absorber pulled apart, dry in the upper area (arrow))
Shock absorber not OK.
(glossy oil film over the entire reservoir tube)
Shock absorber not OK.
(oil droplets (arrow) on the reservoir tube after the finger test)
