AR54.10-N-1129-01A Check Battery
AR54.10-N-1129-01A Check Battery
DANGER:
- Risk of explosion caused by oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns caused by swallowing battery acid. Risk of injury caused by burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries
- Reduce increased voltage after charging process
No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking. AS54.10-Z-0001-01A
Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. AR54.10-P-1129-03A
On models 636, 638, 639, 901, 902, 903, 904, 905, 906 the battery has to be disconnected for the tests to avoid any damage.
Perform test for remaining vehicles with battery installed and connected. Do not connect battery tester to jump start or charging terminal point, always connect it directly with the battery.
If the message "Surface voltage" is displayed during the test, the battery tester has detected that the battery voltage is apparently too high. This increased voltage can be reduced as follows:
- Battery installed: Reduce the increased voltage as per battery tester specifications (e.g. switch on driving lights).
- Battery removed: Reduce increased voltage as described in the document AR54.10-P-1129-03A.
Battery tester
Test prerequisites:
- Battery tester with software release 2.0
- Ignition key not in ignition lock
- Rotary light switch in position "0"
- Radio Off
- Battery voltage higher than 12.4 V
- Tester properly connected to battery
All test steps and entries must be performed thoroughly, otherwise the test result will be distorted.
The test procedure for van/truck is shown in the following as an example.
1 Connect battery tester (1) to battery.
2 Follow the menu and select according to the situation:
- In vehicle (battery connected to on-board electrical system)
- Not in the vehicle (Battery separated from on-board electrical system or removed)
3 Confirm selection with "Enter".
4 Follow the menu and select according to the situation:
- 12 - 114 AH (battery capacity 12 - 114 Ah)
- 115 AH > (battery capacity ≥ 15 Ah)
5 Confirm selection with "Enter".
6 Follow menu and select battery type:
- Normal
- VRLA (battery imprint corresponds to absorbent glass mat battery)
Menu selection appears with selection: Battery capacity 12 - 114 Ah.
7 Confirm selection with "Enter".
8 Follow menu selection and select the number of batteries:
- 1
- 2
Menu selection appears with selection: Battery capacity ≥ 115 Ah and batteries in the vehicle.
9 Confirm selection with "Enter".
10 Follow menu selection and select type of test:
- Individual
- Generation of battery pair
Menu selection appears with selection: Battery capacity ≥ 115 Ah and batteries not in the vehicle.
11 Confirm selection with "Enter".
12 Follow the menu selection and select the test standard for the cold cranking amps.
The test standard (e.g.: EN, DIN, SAE, IEC, JIS, CCA) is printed on behind the specification of the cold cranking amps.
If the test standard imprint is not present, select cold cranking amps EN (European standard).
Example: 12 V 100 Ah 760 A -> Select EN.
13 Confirm selection with "Enter".
14 Read off cold cranking amps and enter in battery tester.
Example: 12 V 100 Ah 760 A -> Cold cranking amps 760 A
If a so-called "system noise" is detected by the battery test/ test equipment , check whether all consumers are switched off and wait (approx. 2 min) until the no-load current is minimized and existing bus systems are switched off.
15 Confirm input with "Enter".
The battery test starts after confirmation of the cold cranking amps entry.
The test result or a message appears after approx. 15 seconds. Proceed accordingly in the event of a message.
16 Follow the menu and select test mode:
- Passenger car (also valid for transporter/truck)
- Taxi
Menu selection appears wit the message: Vehicle model.
17 Confirm selection with "Enter".
18 Follow the menu and select test mode:
- > 0 °C
- < 0 °C
Menu selection appears with the message: Temperature > 0 °C /< 0 °C.
19 Confirm selection with "Enter".
If this message appears, the battery condition is checked again.
20 Follow the menu and select test mode:
- Before charge
- After charge
Menu selection appears with the message: Before charging / After charging.
21 Confirm selection with "Enter".
22 Perform additional menu-assisted functions (e.g. starting engine several times and turning on consumers).
Only in taxi test mode if displayed in menu.
23 Read off test code with "Enter" and continue accordingly:
- "Battery in good condition":
No further measures required.
- "Charge and test":
Fully charge battery and retest (battery voltage > 12.4 V).
- "Replace battery":
Replace battery if this message appears.
Print out test code and file in a tamperproof manner.
