Design on driver side

The driver thorax bag unit is located in a housing, which contains the folded up airbag, the hybrid gas generator and the driver thorax bag squib. Located on the front side of the housing is a predetermined fracture point to allow the airbag to expand. The electrical connection for the driver thorax bag squib is located at the rear of the housing. The driver thorax bag squib's coupling is short circuited automatically via a short circuit bridge if the connector is disconnected.

Design on passenger side

The front passenger thorax bag unit is located in a housing, which contains the folded up airbag, the hybrid gas generator and the front passenger thorax bag squib. Located on the front side of the housing is a predetermined fracture point to allow the airbag to expand. The electrical connection for the front passenger thorax bag squib is located at the rear of the housing. The front passenger thorax bag squib's coupling is short circuited automatically via a short circuit bridge if the connector is disconnected.

Function

When the triggering threshold for the driver thorax bag unit or the front passenger thorax bag unit is exceeded, an electric triggering pulse is transmitted to the driver thorax bag squib or to the passenger thorax bag squib via the Highline airbag control unit (N2/15). The respective squib then ignites the respective solid fuel in the respective gas generator. When the respective solid fuel is burning off, the respective bursting disk is opened, which then releases the compressed gas from the respective pressure reservoir.

As the gas flows into the airbag under high pressure, the respective airbag rapidly inflates, tearing open the respective housing at a predetermined fracture point of the driver thorax bag unit or front passenger thorax bag unit and thrusts into the passenger compartment. Once maximum volume is reached, the pressure in the respective airbag is decreased. The gas escapes from the respective airbag through the respective airbag fabric, causing the airbag to collapse.

In order to avoid inadvertent triggering, the driver thorax bag squib or the passenger thorax bag squib is equipped with a short circuit bridge, which automatically short circuits the connection if the coupling is disconnected.

Disposal

After the respective ignition stage has been triggered, the driver thorax bag unit or the front passenger thorax bag unit must be properly disposed of. In Germany disposal is possible through the Mercedes-Benz Recycling System "MeRSy". In all other countries, please observe applicable regulations.
