The hazard warning system switch (N72/1s6) in the OBF control unit (N72/1) is actuated and indicates this through the flashing of the light emitting diode (LED) integrated into the hazard warning system switch. The UCP control unit has recorded the switch position of the hazard warning system switch and sends the "hazard warning flashing ON" signal over the interior CAN (CAN B) to the SAM control unit (N10). The SAM control unit converts the "hazard warning flasher ON" signal, by actuating the turn signal lamps listed below as well as the left turn signal indicator lamp (A1e10) and the right turn signal indicator lamp (A1e20) in the instrument cluster (A1).

For vehicles with code (LB3) Additional flat rear turn signal lamps on roof, the turn signal request coming from the SAM control unit is then sensed and implemented by the additional turn signal module control unit (N9/1).

If, while the hazard warning system is active, the turn signal is actuated using the left and right turn signal switch (S144s1) of the combination switch (S144), then the turn signal lamps listed below illuminate on the corresponding side of the vehicle only.

The following turn signal lamps are involved in the hazard warning flasher function:
- Turn signal lamp (E1e5) in left lamp unit (E1)
- Turn signal lamp (E2e5) in right lamp unit (E2)
- Driver outside mirror turn signal lamp (M21/6e1), in model 906.111/113/131/133/135/211/213/231/233/235/611/613/ 631/633/635/637/711/713/731/733/735
- Front passenger outside mirror turn signal lamp (M21/7e1), in model 906.111/113/131/133/135/211/213/231/233/235/611/613/631/633/635/637/711/713/731/733/735
- Turn signal lamp (E3e1) in left taillamp (E3), in model 906.611/613/631/633/635/637/653/655/657/711/713/731/ 733/735
- Turn signal lamp (E4e1) in right taillamp (E4), in model 906.611/613/631/633/635/637/653/655/657/711/713/731/ 733/735

The bright and dark duty cycle of the above-listed turn signal lamps makes a differentiation, when the flashing frequency is identical, depending on whether the status "terminal 15 ON" or "terminal 15 OFF" is pending.

Hazard warning signals if airbag deployed
With an airbag deployment, the Lowline airbag control unit (N2/14), except code (SH6) Thoraxbag for driver (in backrest), except code (SH7) Thoraxbag for driver and front passenger (in backrest) and except code (SH9) Windowbag for driver and front passenger, or the Highline airbag control unit (N2/15), with code (SH6) Thoraxbag for driver (in backrest), with code (SH7) Thoraxbag for driver and front passenger (in backrest) or with code (SH9) Windowbag for driver and front passenger, transmits a signal to the SAM control unit to actuate the above-listed turn signal lamps. This function is deactivated by pressing the hazard warning system switch in the OBF control unit.

Flashing with antitheft alarm system (EDW) alarm, with code (FZ5) Anti-theft alarm system (EDW), with code (FZ4) Anti-theft alarm system with interior protection and tow-away protection or with code (FY1) EDW 2 with interior protection, tow-away protection and battery-operated horn
The behavior of the above-listed turn signal lamps is country-specific for an EDW alarm. The bright and dark duty cycle of the turn signal lamp of the above-listed turn signal lamps is also defined. The request to actuate the above-listed turn signal lamps is sent by the OCP control unit (N70) over the interior CAN and is executed by the SAM control unit.

Feedback when unlocking or locking the vehicle
Unlocking the vehicle is acknowledged by a flashing pulse of all above-listed turn signal lamps. Locking the vehicle is acknowledged by 3 flashing pulses. The bright and dark duty cycle of the turn signal lamp of the above-listed turn signal lamps is identical in both cases.

At the same time, in vehicles with code (E43) Trailer hitch socket or with code (E40) Trailer socket 7-pin, the signals for actuating the above-listed lamps on the trailer are forwarded over the interior CAN to the trailer connection unit [AAG] control unit (N28/1).
