4 Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalytic converter
30 AdBlue(R) tank

Location

The SCR catalytic converter is located on the vehicle underbody downstream of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the area of the AdBlue(R) tank.

Task

- Reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) into molecular nitrogen (N2) and water with the aid of ammonia (NH 3)
- Conversion of AdBlue(R) reducing agent into NH3 and carbon dioxide (CO2) and interim storage of the NH 3 which is not needed immediately for conversion of the NOx

Design

The SCR catalytic converter consists of two housings together with the respective honeycomb shaped Cordierite carrier which is coated with zeolite (catalytic components).

Function

The function requirement is that the SCR catalytic converter has reached an operating temperature of 200°C.

The AdBlue(R) reducing agent injected into the exhaust system upstream of the SCR catalytic converter is broken down by thermal decomposition (heat-induced chemical reaction) Task and hydrolysis (water-induced chemical reaction) into (NH3) and (CO2). The NH3 converts the NOx in the exhaust in the SCR catalytic converter into N2 and water. The proportion converted is about 80% of the total nitrogen in the exhaust.
