K40/9 Fuse/relay box (SRB)
N10 SAM control unit

Location
The SAM control unit is integrated into the fuse/relay box (SRB), which is positioned vertically in the left-hand footwell between the firewall and the A-pillar below the instrument panel.

Task
The SAM control unit reads sensors, switches, buttons, operating switches, states and messages, and switches voltage loads over-semi-conductor outputs and relay outputs of the fuse/relay box (SRB). The SAM control unit also sends messages to the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B). The SAM control unit is the "master control unit" for the exterior lights (ABL) and is connected to the CAN-B. The voltage supply of the SAM control unit is setup over the fuse/relay box (SRB) directly from the battery (G1).
Generally the SAM control unit regulates the following systems or supports the "master control units":
- ABL
- Interior lights (IBL)
- Front wiper system (WSA)
- Fanfare horns
- Rear WSA, with code (W78) Window in tailgate or hinged rear door with wipe/wash system
- Headlamp cleaning system (HCS [SRA]), with code (F46) Headlamp cleaning system
- Heated rear window (HHS), with code (H22) Heated rear window or with code (W78) Window in tailgate or hinged rear door with wipe/wash system
- Heated windshield (HFS), with code (F49) Heated windshield
- Anti-theft alarm system [EDW], with code (FZ5) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) or with code (FZ4) Breaking and entering/ vehicle theft alarm with interior protection and tow-away protection
- Anti-theft alarm system, with code (FY1) Anti-theft alarm system 2 with interior protection, tow-away protection and rechargeable-battery horn
- Central locking (CL [ZV])
- Keyless Entry, with code (FY9) Keyless entry+slide
- Rear power window (EFH), with code (W32) Electric vent windows in rear passenger compartment
- Front power window

ABL
The following functions are actuated:
- Actuation of lamps
- Bulb monitoring
- Actuation of cornering illumination, with code (LG1) Xenon headlamp
- Actuation of turn signal
- Actuation of side-marker lamps, with code (LB1) Side-marker lamps
- Actuation of center high-mounted stop lamp (E21), with code (LB5) Center high-mounted stop lamp
- Actuation of left front fog lamp (E5/1) and right front fog lamp (E5/2), with code (L16) Halogen front fog lamps
- Actuation of trailer connection unit [AAG] control unit (N28/1), with code (E43) Trailer hitch socket
- Actuation of additional turn signal module (N9/1), with code (L44) Turn signal lamps at side and front or with code (LB3) Flat turn signal lamps, also at rear on roof
- Actuation of clearance lamps, for model 906.1/2 with code (L07) Clearance lamps

IBL
The following functions are actuated:
- Actuation of interior lamps
- Actuation of switch and controls illumination
- Actuation of comfort illumination, with code (LB9) Illuminated exit or with code (LD4) Comfort illumination for loading/ passenger compartment
- Voltage supply of motion sensor (B27/1), with code (L71) Load compartment illumination over motion detector

Front WSA
The following functions are actuated:
- Windshield washer fluid pump (M5/1) actuation
- Actuation of windshield wiper motor (M6/1)

Fanfare horns
The signaling horn (H1) is actuated.

Rear WSA, with code (W78) Window in tailgate or hinged rear door with wipe/wash system
The following functions are actuated:
- Windshield washer fluid pump (M5/3) actuation
- Actuation of left rear wiper motor (M6/10) and right rear wiper motor (M6/11)

SRA, with code (F46) Headlamp cleaning system
The headlamp cleaning system pump (M5/2) is actuated.
HHS, with code (H22) Heated rear window or with code (W78) Window in tailgate or hinged rear door with wipe/wash system
The left heated rear window (R1/1) and right heated rear window (R1/2) are actuated and their heating filaments.

HFS, with code (F49) Heated windshield
The heated windshield (R22/2) is actuated.

Anti-theft alarm system, with code (FZ5) Anti-theft alarm system (ATA [EDW]) or with code (FZ4) Breaking and entering/vehicle theft alarm with interior protection and tow-away protection
The following functions are actuated:
- Actuation of the signaling horn
- Actuation of IBL
- Actuation of turn signal

Anti-theft alarm system, with code (FY1) Anti-theft alarm system 2 with interior protection, tow-away protection and rechargeable-battery horn
The following functions are actuated:
- Actuation of IBL
- Actuation of turn signal
- Monitoring of heating filaments for left heated rear window and right heated rear window

CL
The following functions are actuated:
- Actuation of front passenger door ZV actuator (M14/5)
- Actuation of rear-end door ZV actuator (M14/7)
- Actuation of DOKA left door ZV actuator (M14/8) and DOKA right door ZV actuator (M14/9) for model 906.2
- Actuation of right sliding door ZV actuator (M14/27), with code (T16) Right load compartment sliding door, with code (T50) Electrical closing assist for sliding door(s) or with code (T55) Electrical actuation for right sliding door
- Actuation of left sliding door ZV actuator (M14/28), with code (T19) Left load compartment sliding door, with code (T50) Electrical closing assist for sliding door(s) or with code (T56) Electrical actuation for left sliding door

Keyless Entry, with code (FY9) Keyless entry+slide
An interface is setup to the central locking.
Rear power window, with code (W32) Electric vent windows in rear passenger compartment
The left vent window motor (M21/8) and the right vent window motor (M21/9) are actuated.

Front power window
The following functions are actuated:
- Actuation of front passenger door power window motor (M10/2)
- Storage of front passenger door power window motor position upon request (Convenience closing) over the AAC [KLA] control and operating unit's (S98) integrated air recirculation mode button (S98s6)
- Actuation of front passenger door power window motor upon request (Convenience opening) over the AAC [KLA] control and operating unit's integrated air recirculation mode button to the previously stored position

To this end the SAM control unit reads in the following sensors, switches, buttons, operating switches and states:
- Outside air temperature sensor (B14), with code (J65) Outside temperature indicator
- Motion sensor, with code (L71) Load compartment illumination over motion detector
- "D+" signal from alternator (G2/7) ("Terminal 61 ON" (engine running))
- Fuel pump with fuel level sensor (M3/5), with engine OM642/646
- Fuel pump with fuel level sensor (M3/6), with engine M272
- Front passenger door ZV actuator
- Rear-end door ZV actuator
- DOKA left door ZV actuator and DOKA right door ZV actuator for model 906.2
- Right sliding door ZV actuator, with code (T16) Right load compartment sliding door, with code (T50) Electrical closing assist for sliding door(s) or with code (T55) Electrical actuation for right sliding door
- Left sliding door ZV actuator, with code (T19) Left sliding door, with code (T50) Electrical closing assist for sliding door(s) or with code (T56) Electrical actuation for left sliding door
- Additional turn signal module, with code (L44) Turn signal lamps at side and front or with code (LB3) Flat turn signal lamps, also at rear on roof
- Rotary light switch (S1)
- Headlamp range controller (S1/1)
- Stop light switch (S9/1)
- Left front brake pad contact sensor (S10/1)
- Right front brake pad contact sensor (S10/2)
- Left rear brake pad contact sensor (S10/3)
- Right rear brake pad contact sensor (S10/4)
- Brake fluid check switch connector sleeve (S11)
- Parking brake switch (S12)
- Backup lamp switch (S16/2), for transmission 711.6
- Rear dome lamp switch (S18/1), with code (LD4) Comfort illumination loading/passenger compartment
- Front passenger power window switch (S21/2)
- Coolant level indicator switch (S41)
- Windshield washer system fluid level indicator switch (S42)
- Status terminal 31b from windshield wiper motor

The SAM control unit also communicates with the following control units over CAN-B:
- With the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "LIGHT_ST (Exterior lights or rotary light switch status)"
- The SAM control unit receives, e.g. "CL_ST (Central locking status)"

- With the instrument cluster (A1)
- The SAM control unit transmit, e.g. "EXL_ACT (Exterior lights activated by light sensor)"
- The SAM control unit receives, e.g. "DRL_ON (Daytime running lamps On)"

- With the lowline airbag control unit (N2/14), except code (SH0) Driver windowbag, except code (SH6) Driver thoraxbag (in backrest), except code (SH7) Thoraxbag for driver and front passenger (in backrest) or except code (SH9) Windowbag for driver and front passenger, or with Highline airbag control unit (N2/15), with code (SH0) Driver windowbag, with code (SH6) Driver thoraxbag (in backrest), with code (SH7) Thoraxbag for driver and front passenger (in backrest) or with code (SH9) Windowbag for driver and front passenger
- The SAM control unit receives, e.g. "CRASH (ARMADA crash waves)"

- With the trailer connection unit [AAG] control unit, with code (E43) Trailer hitch socket
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "LIGHT_ST (Exterior lights or rotary light switch status)"
- The SAM control unit receives, e.g. "TRA_REC (Trailer operation recognized)"

- With the driver door control unit (N69/1)
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "T_OUTSIDE (Outside air temperature)"
- The SAM control unit receives, e.g. "FPW_TF (Front passenger power window actuation)"

- With the right sliding door control unit (N69/6), with code (T50) Electrical closing assist for sliding door(s) or with code (T55) Electrical actuation for right sliding door
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "DOORS_BUSY (Right sliding door ZV actuator energized)"
- The SAM control unit receives, e.g. "RSD_ST (Right sliding door status)"

- With the left sliding door control unit (N69/7), with code (T50) Electrical closing assist for sliding door(s) or with code (T56) Electrical actuation for left sliding door
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "DOORS_BUSY (Left sliding door ZV actuator energized)"
- The SAM control unit receives, e.g. "LSD_ST (Left sliding door status)"

- With the DBE control unit (N70), with code (LD0) Driver/front passenger dome lamp with reading lamp
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "HHS_INTR (Heated windshield heating filament interrupted)"
- The SAM control unit receives, e.g. "RLS_ST (Rain/light sensor (B38/2) status)"

- With the OBF control unit (N72/1)
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "HHS_ON (HHS switched on)"
- The SAM control unit receives, e.g. "HHS_SWO (Switch on HHS)"

- With the warm water auxiliary heating control unit (N33/3), with code (H12) Auxiliary heater (warm water) or with code (HZ5) Warm water auxiliary heater 10 kW with timer
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "TML._61_ON (Terminal 61 switched on)"

- With the electric PTC heater booster (N33/4), with code (HH2) Electric warm air auxiliary heater
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "HFS_ON (Heated windshield switched on)"

- With the AAC [KLA] control and operating unit (S98)
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "HHS_SWO (HHS switched on)"

- With the warm water auxiliary heater 2 control unit (N33/2), with code (HZ9) Heater booster, diesel or with code (HZ5) Warm water auxiliary heater 10 kW with timer
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "TML._61_ON (Terminal 61 switched on)"

- With the PSM control unit (N26/15), with code (ED5) Parameterizable special module (PSM)
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "TML._61_ON (Terminal 61 switched on)"
- The SAM control unit receives, e.g. "PSM_V (Speed limiter)"

- With the PTS control unit (N62), with code (EZ8) Parktronic system (PTS)
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "HAB_IL (Hand brake engaged (indicator lamp))"

- With the radio/radio with navigation (N87/1), with code (EF9) Sound 20 radio, with code (EN4) COMAND with TMC interface or with code (EN8) Sound 50 APS radio
- The SAM control unit transmits, e.g. "DC_RDC_ST (Door and trunk lid contact status)"

Following evaluation of the signals and messages the SAM control unit actuates the following components directly or over the relevant relays or control units:
- Left lamp unit (E1)
High beam (E1e1)
Low beam
Standing and parking lamp
Turn signal lamp
Headlamp range adjustment motor

- Right lamp unit (E2)
High beam (E2e1)
Low beam
Standing and parking lamp
Turn signal lamp
Headlamp range adjustment motor
