S110 Right multifunction steering wheel button group
S111 Left multifunction steering wheel button group
S111s5 Signaling horn button

The multifunction steering wheel (MFL), in combination with the multifunction display and the instrument cluster (A1), serves to enhance active driving safety in road traffic. The driver can concentrate on the traffic without distraction when controlling and operating various vehicle components. The MFL enables the driver to control and inquire the following systems:
- The base functions (including workshop services and roller dynamometer)
- The audio system
- The navigation system
- The trip computer
- The fault and warning messages
- The general settings
- The telephone

Function requirement: "circuit 15R ON".

Only systems and functions with which the vehicle was equipped are displayed. If a system is not installed, it is skipped when the system selection button (S111s3) on the left multifunction steering wheel button group is pressed.

Except in the case of a trip computer, when the display level is changed it is always the basic display of the selected level that is displayed, not the submenu last selected in this display.

The system selected by the user is displayed in the multifunction display in the instrument cluster. In addition, the signaling horn can be operated via the signaling horn button in the impact plate of the MFL.

Left multifunction steering wheel button group
The system selection button and the scroll forward/back button (S111s1) are included in the left multifunction steering wheel button group. Each of the systems can be called up using the system selection button. Depending on which section of the system selection button is pressed, it is possible to scroll up or down through the menus. Within a selected system you can open other submenus using the scroll forward/back button.

Right multifunction steering wheel button group
The accept/terminate phone call button (S110s3) and the + and - button (S110s1) are included in the right multifunction steering wheel button group. A telephone call can be answered or terminated with the accept/terminate phone call button. The + and - button can be used to alter the volume of the system that is currently active, select submenu items as well as change settings. Furthermore, it is possible for example in the Settings menu to extend (+) or shorten (-) the OFF delay time of the exterior lights.

Transfer of signals
The control signals are transmitted voltage-coded from the left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group on the MFL to the MRM control unit (N80).The MRM control unit converts the signals into messages (e.g. "MFL_ST_WIPPE_1_1 (MFL status, top left button up)") and places them on the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C). The instrument cluster reads in these messages (e.g. "MFL_ST_WIPPE_1_1 (MFL status, top left button up)") and evaluates them. The instrument cluster then places the processed messages (e.g. "RT_EIN (switch on dynamometer test mode for Electronic Stability Program (ESP))") on the Controller Area Network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B) or the processed messages (e.g. "UFB_EIN (ambient illumination on)") on CAN-C, where they can be retrieved by other control units.
