The telephone system can be operated as follows:
- Directly on the radio/radio with navigation
- Via the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) in combination with the multifunction display of the instrument cluster
The audio source is automatically muted during a telephone call.
The telephone radio signals are transmitted and received via the rod antenna of the antenna amplifier. When the telephone is operational, the LCD (liquid crystal display) color display of the radio/radio with navigation shows the reception field strength in 5 levels. All the control and useful signals are transmitted by the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).
The radio/radio with navigation has the following telephone functions:
- Automatic disabling of telephone card when the personal identification number (PIN) is entered incorrectly 3 times.
- A 911 emergency call can also be made without entering a PIN number or when the telephone card is not inserted.
- Direct dialing of the telephone number with the rotary switch or numerical keypad, display of name of party being called (when number entered is known).
- Speed dial: The first 10 memory locations can be dialed by pressing one key only, all other memory locations can be dialed by entering the 3-digit memory location number.
- Selection from memory lists sorted according to:
- memory location numbers
- Names (alphabetic)
- List of the 10 numbers dialed last
- Display of the telephone number during an incoming call (in the event that the number is also transmitted by radio signal), display of the caller's name (if the number is known).

Mail function
The Mail function, with code (EH3) Universal preinstallation for networked portable CTEL, includes the receiving, sending and management of SMS messages.
Function requirements for this are:
- The portable CTEL must be inserted in the telephone cradle
- The PIN must be entered
- The portable CTEL must be registered in a cellular mobile telephone network
Address book function
The following functions are available in the address book:
- Address book entry
- Telephone book entry
- New address book entry
- Delete address book entry
- Select entry
System settings function
The following functions are available for the system settings in the "System" submenu:
- Set time
- Set languages
- Set sounds
- Display settings
- Reset (deleting all user inputs)
