Ignition ON, general points
For ignition ON, the engine control in the CDI control unit (N3/9) is switched on and the engine prepared for starting.
Ignition ON function sequence
When the ignition is switched on by the EIS control unit (N73) the on-board voltage from "circuit 30" is passed on to "circuit 15" via the circuit 15 relay (F58kH) to the front SAM control unit (N10).
If a voltage is applied to the CDI control unit at "circuit 15", the circuit 87 relay for the engine (F58kD) is actuated by a ground signal.
This causes the relay to close its power contact and, through the corresponding electrical fuses, the "circuit 30" voltage is connected as "circuit 87@ to the CDI control unit and to the corresponding sensors and actuators of the engine control.
If a voltage is applied to "circuit 87", the engine control switches on and an output stage driver in the CDI control unit takes on further actuation of the circuit relay 87 for the engine.
The "circuit 31" ground connection runs from the battery (G1) through battery ground (W10) and several ground lines to the ground of the RH major assemblies compartment (power ground (W16/4)).
When the engine control is switched on, the CDI control unit carries out the following functions:
- For complete security, the fuel pump (M3) is actuated over the fuel pump relay (F4k) (only the first time the ignition is switched on after the vehicle is unlocked).
- In the instrument cluster (A1) the engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58) (except code (494) USA version) or the CHECK ENGINE indicator lamp (A1e26) (for code (494) USA version) is actuated by the CDI control unit via the engine compartment CAN (CAN C) for lamp check.
- Data are exchanged with the EIS control unit (circuit 50 signal and drive authorization) over the engine compartment CAN.
- Actuation of the glow time output stage (N14/3) via the drive train LIN (LIN C1). The glow time output stage reacts by actuating the glow plugs (R9) on the plus side. The preglow indicator lamp (A1e16) is actuated via the engine compartment CAN.
- The fault memory in the CDI control unit can be read out and deleted through the data link connector (X11/4).
- A diagnosis can be carried out with the Diagnosis Assistance System (DAS) via the data link connector.
- The throttle valve actuator (M16/6) checks its return spring (via the position of the throttle valve) may lead to a positioner adaptation.
