31 5th/6th gear shift arm

The gearshift on transmission 711.6 consists of the following components:
^ Shift lever knob
^ Shift cable/selector cable
^ Integrated module with internal gearshift system
^ External shift

The integral module with internal shift mechanism consists of the following components:
^ Reverse gear shift fork
^ 1st/2nd gear shift fork
^ 3rd/4th gear shift arm
^ 5th/6th gear shift arm
^ Main shifter shaft (precentered)

The external shift consists of the following components:
^ Relay levers
^ Bracket
^ Selector rod
^ Gearshift lever

The transmission neutral position switch (S164) is located on top of the rear housing part of the transmission.

The shift lever knob is located in the shift unit underneath the OBF control unit (N72/1) at the center of the instrument panel. The shift lever knob is used to initiate the selection movement for the gates and the shift movements for engaging the gears in the shift unit, to split them and to transmit them via one shift cable and one selector cable to the external shift mechanism on transmission 711.6. The external shift mechanism on transmission 711.6 converts the longitudinal movements of the gearshift lever into a rotational movement for the integral module with internal shift mechanism and in addition reduces the incoming shift and selection movements in order to reduce the noticeable manual shift forces.

The transmission neutral position switch detects the neutral position of the transmission. It detects whether or not a gear is engaged.

On vehicles with code (MJ6) Engine start/stop system, the transmission neutral position switch is read in via a discrete line by the CDI control unit (N3/20), with OM 642, or by the CDI control unit (N3/21), with OM 646, and placed as a message on the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C).

On vehicles except code (MJ6) Engine start/stop system, the transmission neutral position switch is read in via a discrete line by the ESP control unit (N30/4) and placed as a message on CAN-C.

Inadvertent engagement of reverse gear is prevented by an active reverse gear lockout. In order to reach the reverse gear gate, the pull ring below the shift lever knob must be pulled up. The backup lamp switch (S16/2) is actuated as soon as the driver moves the gearshift lever into the reverse gear gate. The signal is read in by the SAM control unit (N10) and placed on the Controller Area Network bus class B (interior compartment) (CAN-B).

At the same time, the left backup lamp (E3e3), the right backup lamp (E4e3) and the backup warning horn (H3/4), with code (JW0) Backup warning system, are actuated.
