11 Driver airbag unit
N2/15 Highline airbag control unit
R12/3 Driver airbag ignition squib
Location
The driver airbag unit with the driver airbag squib is integrated in the impact absorber of the steering wheel.
Task
The driver airbag unit protects the driver from injury in the event of a head-on collision. The driver is caught and slowed by the airbag of the driver airbag unit, which fills up the space between the steering wheel and the driver's body.
Design
The driver airbag unit is designed as described in the following:
- The housing containing the driver airbag unit is mounted in the center of the steering wheel by screws and has a padded cover facing the driver. The cover, inscribed with the Mercedes logo and the words "SRS AIRBAG," is pre-slit to allow the airbag to escape.
- The gas generator, located within the housing, is outfitted with an acid-free solid fuel unit. The gas generator is connected to the folded up airbag via a filter. The airbag is made of a high-quality, tear-resistant polyamide fabric.
- The electric connection of the driver airbag squib takes place via the steering wheel clock spring contact, which is integrated in the MRM control unit (N80), and the vehicle wiring harness to the control unit installed depending on the equipment, which can be installed in the following versions:
- Lowline airbag control unit (N2/14), except code (SH6) Thorax bag for driver (in seat backrest), except code (SH7) Thorax bag for driver and front passenger (in seat backrest) and except code (SH9) Window bag for driver and front passenger
- Highline airbag control unit, with code (SH6) Thorax bag for driver (in seat backrest), with code (SH7) Thorax bag for driver and front passenger (in seat backrest) or with code (SH9) Window bag for driver and front passenger
- In order to prevent inadvertent triggering, the driver airbag squib is equipped with a short circuit bridge, which automatically short circuits the connection if the coupling is disconnected.
Function
Depending on the severity of the accident, an electric ignition pulse is output to the driver airbag squib via the control unit that is installed depending on the variant. The driver airbag squib ignites the solid fuel in the gas generator. When the solid fuel is burning off, a bursting disk is opened, which then releases the compressed gas from the pressure reservoir. The airbag which is folded on top of the gas generator then inflates and, under the pressure of the gas flowing in, forces open the steering wheel cover at a predetermined fracture point.
As more gas enters the airbag, it pushes through the predetermined fracture point and fills to maximum volume. This is followed by depressurization in the airbag. The gas escapes from the airbag via an exhaust vent and the airbag collapses.
Disposal
The driver airbag unit must be disposed of appropriately after the ignition stage has been triggered. In Germany disposal is possible through the Mercedes-Benz Recycling System "MeRSy". In all other countries, please observe applicable regulations.
