Vehicles without ASSYST maintenance computer
Maintenance is defined in accordance with a defined travel distance for Europe ("ECE") and Rest of World ("ROW"). For "ROW" countries the maintenance may deviate somewhat depending on circumstances. The defined maintenance is available in each valid country-specific maintenance booklet.

Changing engine oil change and filter
The engine oil- and filter change interval is dependent on the:
- Engine oil quality
- fuel sulfur content
- vehicle mode of service

With a fuel sulfur content greater than 3000 - 8000 ppm (= 0.3 to 0.8 % by weight) the oil change interval is as for severe operating conditions.

Normal operation
Maintenance as per travel distance. Vehicle service on freeways and expressways, in regional and intercity service, in large cities and densely populated areas.

Severe operating conditions
Maintenance operations for vehicle service, whose work load goes over and beyond that for normal use, are to be conducted at shorter intervals (e.g. for regular journeys on unsurfaced roads, for extremely short distances with frequent engine stops).

Vehicles with ASSYST maintenance monitor
The ASSYST maintenance computer determines the ideal maintenance time and shows this information in the instrument cluster's display. The remaining distance is displayed in km or the remaining driving time in days, depending on whether the km interval or the time interval is reached first.

Additional jobs at the maintenance service or time-dependent maintenance jobs are not displayed on the instrument cluster display. These must be carried out additionally or separately at the relevant point in time.

After completion of the maintenance work reset the ASSYST maintenance computer.

Maintenance information
The maintenance scope is available on each valid maintenance sheet and the maintenance content for the individual maintenance item in the maintenance specifications in the Workshop Information System (WIS).
The additional operations for the maintenance service and the time- dependent maintenance operation are summarized at the end of maintenance sheet. It should be agreed with the customer and ticked off on the header section on the first page:
- Additional operations once at 1st. oil service Plus
- Additional operation every 3rd engine oil change
- Additional operations at 1st maintenance service, then every 120,000 km
- Additional operations at 1st maintenance service, then every 160,000 km
- Additional operations as of 160,000 km
- Additional operations every 2 years
- Additional operations every 10 years/320,000 km
- Additional operations every 15 years/320,000 km

The completion of the individual maintenance items should be documented on the maintenance sheet by making a cross in the boxes in front of the operation titles.

A cross should be entered in the boxes after the operation titles to identify items which were not OK when the vehicle was received. The person carrying out the work provides confirmation of this by a signature in the top part of the maintenance sheet.

The checking of fluid levels for manual transmission, automatic transmission, transfer case, front axle and rear axle was replaced by a visual inspection of the major assemblies for oil leakage.
If any leaks are present, the procedure, as before, is to determine the cause and to rectify it subject to a separate repair order.

Maintenance tags
A maintenance tag must be completed after carrying out the maintenance work and attached in a clearly visible position to the engine compartment.

Service manual
Document the completion of the maintenance and, where applicable, completion of any additional operations on the confirmation pages.
