SAE viscosity grades for engines
271.9, 272.9, 642.8, 642.9, 646.9, 651.9
SAE viscosity grades
The SAE viscosity class must be selected in accordance with the average season-dependent air temperature.
Applying SAE viscosity classes precisely on the basis of the outside air temperatures would necessitate more frequent changing of engine oil.
The temperature limits for SAE viscosity classes should therefore be regarded as guidelines which can be exceeded or undercut for a short duration.
Specified engine oil qualities
Approved engine oils are those named in respectively valid MB Specifications for Operating Fluids. The oil types for different engine oil qualities are listed under the respective sheet number.
In the case of diesel engines the intervals for engine oil and filter change depend on the quality of engine oil and its fuel sulfur content.
Engine oil change intervals Vehicles without maintenance computer ASSYST
See following tables. The engine oil and the filter must be changed once a year independent of the kilometer intervals specified in the tables.
Engine oil change intervals Vehicles with maintenance computer ASSYST
ASSYST calculates the optimum maintenance time and informs you of this in the multifunction display. The remaining distance which can be driven is displayed in kilometers or in days according to whether the kilometer interval or time interval is reached first.
For vehicles with a diesel engine:
For a fuel sulfur content of 0.5 to 1.0 percent by weight, perform an oil change after half the engine oil change interval.
For a fuel sulfur content of greater than 1.0 percent by weight perform an oil change at an engine oil change interval which is according to the more difficult operating conditions.
