N71 LWR control unit

Location
The LWR control unit is located in the front passenger footwell behind the panel on the A-pillar.

Task
The LWR control unit serves to keep the incline angle of the driving lights constant within the legally prescribed limits based on changes in vehicle level, regardless of whether they are caused by a load or the rolling motion during acceleration or deceleration to prevent dazzling oncoming traffic.

Function
The LWR control unit supplies the LWR rear axle sensor (A51) and the LWR front axle sensor (A52) with a voltage of 5 V and also supplies voltage to the headlamp range adjustment motor (E1/6m1) integrated in the left XENON lamp unit (E1/6) and the headlamp range adjustment motor (E2/6m1) integrated in the right XENON lamp unit (E2/6) ("terminal 15 ON" and terminal 31).

In the other direction, the LWR rear axle sensor and the LWR front axle sensor transmit a signal to the LWR control unit as a function of changes in the vehicle level, in each case via a direct line. The LWR control unit evaluates the signals of the LWR rear axle sensor and the LWR front axle sensor and actuates, via a direct line, the headlamp range adjustment motor integrated in the left XENON lamp unit and the headlamp range adjustment motor integrated in the right XENON lamp unit.

In addition, the LWR control unit is connected to the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN-C). It communicates via CAN-C with the following control units:
- With the EIS [EZS] control unit (N73)
- LWR control unit transmits e.g. "SD_RS_ALWR (system diagnosis response)"
- LWR control unit receives e.g. "ABL_EIN (switch on low beam)"

- With the instrument cluster (A1)
- LWR control unit transmits e.g. "ALWR_DEF (message "ALWR defective! Go to workshop")"
- LWR control unit receives e.g. "KL_61E (terminal 61 disconnected)"

- With ESP control unit (N30/4)
- LWR control unit receives e.g. "RV_ST (status of front wheels)"

In addition, the LWR control unit places the message "FZGN_LWR (vehicle level from LWR)" on CAN-C.
