The Active Service System (ASSYST), which is integrated in the instrument cluster (A1), is operated using the following buttons in the instrument cluster:
- M button
- Reset button
- Plus button
- Minus button
Operation is split into the following actions:
- Service indicator can be called up by driver
- Resetting service scope
- Calling up workshop level
- Displays of current engine oil quantity, with engine 642, with engine 646 or with engine 651
- Engine oil level measurement, with engine 642, with engine 646 or with engine 651
Service indicator can be called up by driver
The service indicator is called up by the driver as follows:
1. The status "circuit 15R ON" is activated (radio position).
2. Press the M button repeatedly until the service symbol and the current remaining distance, the remaining time or service exceeded is shown on the display. The plus button or minus button can be used to switch between the remaining distance and the remaining time.
Resetting service scope
The service scope is reset as follows:
1. The status "circuit 15 ON" is activated (ignition switched on).
2. Press the reset button for approx. 30 s until a beep sounds.
3. On engine 642, engine 646 or engine 651 with a long oil change interval (40,000 km) press the M button repeatedly until "rESEt.51" is shown on the display or on older instrument clusters "rESEt 228.5" is shown together with the oil can symbol.
3. On engine 642, engine 646 or engine 651 with a short oil change interval (30,000 km) press the M button repeatedly until "rESEt.31" is shown on the display or on older instrument clusters "rESEt 229.3" is shown together with the oil can symbol.
3. On engine 271 or engine 272 with a long oil change interval (30,000 km) press the M button repeatedly until "rESEt 229.5" is shown on the display together with the oil can symbol.
3. On engine 271 or engine 272 with a short oil change interval (23,000 km) press the M button repeatedly until "rESEt 229.3" is shown on the display together with the oil can symbol.
4. Press the reset button for approx. 3 s, release and press again.
If the remaining distance or time has been exceeded, it is not possible to reset the service scope until 30 s after the message on the display has disappeared.
The service scope cannot be reset again immediately after being reset (locked for approx.1000 km). If the wrong oil type was selected by mistake, proceed as follows:
1. Disable the status "circuit 15 ON" and then activate it (switch ignition off and on).
2. Press the reset button for approx. 30 s until a beep sounds.
3. Press the M button repeatedly until "rESEt StoP" is shown on the display together with the oil can symbol.
4. Press the reset button for approx. 3 s, release and press again.
5. Then carry out steps 3 and 4 again.
The following data is stored when resetting the service scope:
- Current kilometer reading, rounded to 100 km
- Total of refill quantities in the last interval
- Remaining distance
- Remaining time
- Product of quality factors
- In 5 data records the data of the 5 most recent resets
- Operating time
- Idle time
- Service scope
The service scope should not be reset using Star Diagnosis as this would delete the driving conditions.

Displays of current engine oil quantity, with engine 642, with engine 646 or with engine 651
The current engine oil quantity shown on the instrument cluster display is called up as follows:
1. Call up the workshop level as described.
2. Then call up the "Engine code and oil level" menu by repeatedly pressing the M button.
Engine oil level measurement, with engine 642, with engine 646 or with engine 651
An engine oil level measurement can only be performed with status "circuit 61 OFF" and only after expiry of a waiting time. The waiting time, after which the status "circuit 61 OFF" is pending, is dependent on the engine oil temperature in the following manner:
- Up to 20 °C the waiting time is 30 min.
- As of 60 °C the waiting time is 1 min.
- At temperatures between 20 and 60 °C the waiting time adopts corresponding intermediate values.
Press the M button repeatedly until the oil can symbol appears on the instrument cluster display. Measurement of the engine oil level is indicated by the "--:--" display flashing on and off in the display. Upon completion of the engine oil level measurement, one of the following messages may appear alongside the oil can symbol in the display:
- "OK", engine oil level is OK
- "-1.0 l", "-1.5 l" or "-2.0 l", engine oil level is too low
- "HI", engine oil level is too high
