GF00.20-D-2009HD Engine Oil Monitoring, Function

GF00.20-D-2009HD Engine Oil Monitoring, Function

General
The engine oil monitoring function consists of the following subfunctions:
- Engine oil monitoring
- Displays in the instrument cluster (A1)
- Measuring engine oil level
- Resetting of the service scope following an engine oil change

Engine oil monitoring
The engine oil level, the engine oil quality and the engine oil temperature are monitored constantly.
To this end, the components below are read in by the associated control unit:
- Engine oil sensor (B40) via CDI control unit (N3/20), with engine 642
- Engine oil sensor (B40/5) via CDI control unit (N3/21), with engine 646
- Engine oil level sensor (B40/6) with integrated engine oil temperature sensor (B40/9) via CDI control unit (N3/28), with engine 651

The CDI control unit sends the corresponding data as messages "T_OEL (oil temperature)", "OIL_FS (oil level)" and "OEL_QUAL (oil quality)" through the Controller Area Network bus class C (engine compartment) (CAN C) to the Active Service System (ASSYST) integrated in the instrument cluster.

Engine oil refills are detected automatically and result in a bonus for vehicles with code (JW6) Maintenance computer (ASSYST) that extends the remaining distance of the service interval accordingly.

Displays in the instrument cluster
After receiving the messages "T_OEL (oil temperature)", "OEL_FS (oil level)" and "OEL_QUAL (oil quality)", the following displays appear on the instrument cluster display (A1p1):
- Except code (JK3) High-end instrument cluster with speedometer in km:
- In the event of engine oil overfilling:
- Oil can symbol and the message "HI"

- In the event of engine oil starvation:
- Oil can symbol and, depending on the top-up quantity, the message "-1.0 l", "-1.5 l" or "-2.0 l"

- With code (JK3) High-end instrument cluster with speedometer in km:
- In the event of engine oil overfilling:
- Oil can symbol and the message "Engine oil level - Reduce oil level."

- In the event of engine oil starvation:
- Oil can symbol and one of the following messages depending on the top-up quantity:
- "Engine oil level - Visit workshop."
- "Engine oil level - Stop, Engine off."
- "Top up engine oil 1.0 l.", "Top up engine oil 1.5 l." or "Top up engine oil 2.0 l."

Furthermore, with one of the following equipment variants the current engine oil level can be called up in the workshop level of the instrument cluster:
- Except code (JK3) High-end instrument cluster with speedometer in km
- With code (JK3) High-end instrument cluster with speedometer in km

Except code (JK3) High-end instrument cluster with speedometer in km
The current engine oil quantity shown on the instrument cluster display in the workshop level is called up as follows:
- Activate the status "circuit 15R ON" (radio position).
- Press and hold the reset button (A1s2) in the instrument cluster for 20 s until a short warning tone can be heard.
- Press the M button in the instrument cluster within 10 s.
- The workshop level appears on the display of the instrument cluster.
- Then call up the "Engine code and oil level" subsystem by repeatedly pressing the M button in the instrument cluster.

With code (JK3) High-end instrument cluster with speedometer in km
The current engine oil quantity shown on the instrument cluster display in the workshop level is called up as follows:
- Activate the status "circuit 15R ON" (radio position).
- Press and hold the reset button in the instrument cluster for 20 s until a short warning tone can be heard.
- Then press the bottom part of the system selection button (S111s3).
- The workshop level appears on the display of the instrument cluster.
- Then select the "Oil level reading" menu by pressing the top or bottom part of the scroll forward/back button (S111s1).

Measuring engine oil level
An engine oil level measurement can only be performed with status "circuit 61 OFF" and only after expiry of a waiting time. The waiting time, after which the status "circuit 61 OFF" is pending, is dependent on the engine oil temperature in the following manner:
- Up to 20 °C the waiting time is 30 min.
- As of 60 °C the waiting time is 1 min.
- At temperatures between 20 and 60 °C the waiting time adopts corresponding intermediate values.

With one of the following equipment variants, the engine oil measurement is carried out using the buttons in the instrument cluster:
- Except code (JK3) High-end instrument cluster with speedometer in km
- With code (JK3) High-end instrument cluster with speedometer in km

Except code (JK3) High-end instrument cluster with speedometer in km
The engine oil level measurement is carried out using the M button in the instrument cluster.
Press the M button repeatedly until the oil can symbol appears on the instrument cluster display. Measurement of the engine oil level is indicated by the "--:--" display flashing on and off on the instrument cluster display. Upon completion of the engine oil level measurement, one of the following displays may appear alongside the oil can symbol on the instrument cluster display:
- "OK", engine oil level is OK
- "-1.0 l", "-1.5 l" or "-2.0 l", engine oil level is too low
- "HI", engine oil level is too high

If there is a fault in the measuring system, such as a fault in the engine oil sensor or the engine oil level sensor, the oil can symbol and the message "-2.0 l" are displayed on the instrument cluster display 30 s after the fault has occurred.

For diagnosis purposes, the CDI control unit must also be read out via Star Diagnosis.

With code (JK3) High-end instrument cluster with speedometer in km
The engine oil level measurement is carried out using the engine oil level button (A1s1) in the instrument cluster.
If the driver attempts to call up the engine oil level with the status "circuit 61 ON" being active, then the instrument cluster display shows the oil can symbol and the message "Engine oil level - Not with engine running.".
Press the engine oil level button. The engine oil level measurement is indicated by the appearance of the oil can symbol and the message "Engine oil level measurement running." on the instrument cluster display.
Upon completion of the engine oil level measurement, one of the following messages may appear alongside the oil can symbol on the instrument cluster display:
- "Engine oil level OK", the engine oil level is OK
- "Top up engine oil 1.0 l.", "Top up engine oil 1.5 l." or "Top up engine oil 2.0 l.", the engine oil level is too low
- "Engine oil level
- Reduce oil level.", the engine oil level is too high
- "Engine oil level
- Please switch ignition on"
- "Observe waiting time"

If there is a fault in the measuring system, such as a fault in the engine oil sensor or the engine oil level sensor, the oil can symbol and the message "Engine oil level - Stop, Engine off." or "Oil sensor - Visit workshop." are displayed on the instrument cluster display 30 s after the fault has occurred.

For diagnosis purposes, the CDI control unit must also be read out via Star Diagnosis.

Resetting of the service scope following an engine oil change
Following every engine oil change, the service scope and thus the service interval for ASSYST, which is integrated in the instrument cluster, must be reset. This resets the remaining distance and time to the starting distance and time for the particular engine. Resetting can be carried out via the instrument cluster or using Star Diagnosis.
The following data can be stored when resetting takes place:
- Current kilometer reading, rounded to 100 km
- Total of refill quantities in the last interval
- Remaining distance
- Remaining time
- Product of quality factors
- In 5 data records the data of the 5 most recent resets
- Operating time
- Idle time
- Service scope

These data can only be read out via STAR DIAGNOSIS.

The service scope should not be reset using Star Diagnosis as this would delete the driving conditions.

If during an engine oil change the prescribed engine oil refill quantity is not added, then the remaining distance (internal mileage) is reduced.
