^ Transmission stage "R" active

^ Turn signal indicator active via turn signaling function or steering angle > parameterized steering angle.
Function
Cornering illumination represents an additional light function which is realized with the aid of special front fog lamps (cornering illumination with integrated front fog lamp function). In addition to the low beams, it permits an improved illumination of the roadway in the turning direction.
The master control unit for this is the front SAM control unit.
While driving forward, each inside corner front fog lamp is switched on. When the reverse gear is engaged the front fog lamps are inversely actuated.
It is switched on and off with dimming.
Only one front fog lamp is actuated at one time, except for reverse travel when the parameterization has been changed to "Parking illumination Max". In such an event both front fog lamps are actuated.
If the request for right is present at the steering angle sensor (N49) or at the left and right turn signal switch (S4s1), the right front fog lamp is actuated. If the request for left is present at the steering angle sensor or at the left and right turn signal switch, the left front fog lamp is actuated. The cornering illumination lamp remains active for as long as the function requirements exist. The turn signal switch has priority over the steering angle sensor.
If the lamp has been switched off using the rotary light switch and if this is then set back to "Auto" or "Manual driving lights" position, then the cornering illumination lamps are only switched on again if the left and right turn signal switch or the steering angle sensor request this again.
Diagnosis
A malfunction of the cornering illumination is displayed in the instrument cluster. In the event of a combination with other illumination functions a fault text is displayed.
There are three possible error messages for cornering illumination:
^ "Left cornering illumination defective"
^ "Right cornering illumination defective"
^ "Cornering illumination not available" (optional)
Faults that are pending for a period of t > 960 ms are recognized. This corresponds to a switch-on attempt.
If a fault is detected the output for cornering illumination actuation is switched off and a corresponding error bit.
To ensure that a possible loose contact does not result in a permanent shutoff, a cyclical switch-on is performed ten times every 5 seconds, as long as the switch-on conditions are fulfilled. At this point, a permanent cutout is made until a new function request is received.
