The gear selector switch for DIRECT SELECT (S16/13) and off road program switch (N72/1s25) make it possible to adapt the automatic shifting process to special operating conditions.

In the "Off road program ON" or "Off road program OFF" transmission mode selection the shifting range in the forward gears can be altered while driving, but the fully integrated transmission control (VGS) prevents any shifting which would result in impermissibly high engine speeds.

If the Off road program has been deactivated, an overall ratio is then available that is longer when compared to the activated off road program and thus which has a lower output torque when driving forward or reversing.

This allows the vehicle to move off more gently. Apart from this in a deactivated Off road program the gears are not fully engaged.
