GF91.60-P-2002GI Deployment Logic For ETRs With Driver/Front Passenger Airbags/Side Airbag Function

GF91.60-P-2002GI Deployment Logic For ETRs With Driver/front Passenger Airbags/Side Airbag Function
- as of 1.12.99

General
As the deployment strategies are subject to continual improvements, such as those arising, e.g. from recent knowledge in the area of accident research, the deployment strategies described below should be viewed as pointers only. For this reason, the following does not take an additional look at the characteristics of the new 2-stage airbags (driver and front passenger airbags as of 1.09.00).

As of 1.09.01 left rear window airbag the is deployed over the left rear window airbag initiator (R12/22) and the left right window airbag by the right rear window airbag initiator (R12/23). Deployment is detected by the left side airbag and window airbag sensor (A53/1) right side airbag and and window airbag sensor (A54/1)

In the event of a crash, the restraint systems control module (N2/7) follows a deployment strategy based on the following input parameters:
- Triggering thresholds, which are exceeded in the event of a crash (head-on collision, side collision or rear end collision)
- The state of the driver, passenger and left/right rear seat belt buckle switches
- Occupancy status of front passenger seat, detected by the passenger seat occupied and automatic child seat recognition sensor (B48)

In the event of a head-on collision a differentiation is made between the two triggering thresholds. If the driver/passenger seat belt latch plate is not inserted into the respective buckle, airbag deployment occurs at the first triggering threshold. In addition, there are different deployment conditions for the driver and passenger sides of the vehicle.

With connected belt buckles the driver/front passenger airbags are deployed only after the second threshold is exceeded.
In the event of a non occupied front passenger seat the supplementary restraint system not is activated on the front passenger seat side.

The status of a belt buckle does not influence side airbag deployment. In the event of a side collision, in which the triggering threshold is exceeded, the restraint systems control module (N2/7) deploys the front and rear side airbags on the affected side of the vehicle.

(Exception: If the front passenger seat is not occupied, the side airbag on the front passenger side does not deploy).

The emergency tensioning retractors (ETRs) for the driver, front passenger and left/right rear seats are only activated when the respective seat belts are buckled. Where a seat belt buckle switch is faulty (error case) the ETR is deployed in the event of an collision. Under the airbag deployment logic, the system assumes here that the seat is occupied by a non-belted passenger.

Occupancy states detected by the passenger seat occupancy and child seat sensor (B48)
Seat Occupancy Sensor (SOS) Active:

Seat not occupied
- Passenger seat not occupied
- Child seat without mounted transponder (weight less than 12 kg / 120 mm dia. is not achieved)

Seat occupied:
- Front passenger seat occupied (weight of 12 kg / 120 mm dia. is achieved)

In the event of a fault in the automatic child seat recognition sensor it is assumed that a child seat has been mounted regardless of the front passenger seat detection sensor. The front passenger seat airbag is not deployed in such an event.

Child Seat Sensor (ACSR) Active:
Child seat detected:
- Permissible, control-module coded MB child seat with transponder

Child seat not detected:
- No permissible MB-child seat with transponder
- Permissible MB-child seat with transponder, but not control module-coded

Alignment incorrect:
- Permissible MB-child seat with transponder not correctly installed or defective (e.g. only one resonator detected)

The child seat detected signal superimposes the seat occupied signal (provided that the child seat exceeds the weight of 12 kg over a 120 mm diameter circle)
