Route Calculation, Function

After entering the destination on the radio and navigation unit (A2/56) the route is calculated by the integrated navigation processor and updated continuously. It can only be calculated within the digitized map areas. Calculation of the route is the prerequisite for guidance.

Route calculation, function
The navigation processor calculates the route on the basis of the destination entered and with the aid of the CD-ROM map data and continuous location finding. During calculation, it takes into consideration the streets available on the CD-ROM map and their attributes such as one-way streets, turning prohibitions and classes of streets,... (to extent present). Moreover, the user can define the manner in which the route is to be calculated:

FASTEST ROUTE
SHORTEST ROUTE
OWN SETTINGS

With "OWN SETTINGS" the following route sections can be disregarded in calculating the route.

FREEWAYS, FERRIES, TOLL ROADS

After calculation of the route, the navigation processor makes up a list of the streets making up the route. This route list is then used for guidance. It can be displayed during guidance by pressing the "I" button (INFO) and "RTE".

Route updating
When the driver deviates from the calculated route, the navigation processor automatically calculates a new route list. The current position and direction of motion are taken into consideration and the new route is optimized accordingly. This is accomplished without a message on the display.

Detours around traffic jams with the "Traffic jam" menu key
When a traffic jam is reported via traffic radio and before reaching the section in question, a detour around the traffic jam can be calculated. For this purpose, activate the "Traffic jam" menu and enter the length of the traffic jam including the distance to the beginning of the jam.

NOTE: The maximum possible entry for the length of the traffic jam depends on the section of the route presently being driven.

The "Traffic jam" function is also available for Federal and State highways as well as in the inner city area.

Trips outside of digitized map area
If the vehicle leaves the digitized CD-ROM map area (e.g. drives into a parking building), it is no longer possible to calculate or update the route. The words "OFF ROAD" appear on the display. The words "OFF MAP" appear upon leaving the map boundary.
Destinations located outside of the digitized map area cannot be taken into consideration for route calculation.
