Reverse Clutch
REVERSE CLUTCHPreparation
SST
Preinspection
Reverse Clutch Operation
1. Set the reverse clutch onto the oil pump.
2. Check the clutch operation by applying compressed air through the fluid passages shown.
Air pressure: 390 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi) max.
Clutch Clearance
1. Measure the clearance between the retaining plate and the snap ring.
Clearance: 0.5 - 0.8 mm (0.020 - 0.031 inch)
2. If the clearance is not within specification, adjust it by selecting a proper snap ring.
Disassembly/Inspection/Assembly
1. Disassemble in the order shown in the figure, referring to Disassembly Note.
2. Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly, referring to Assembly Procedure.
Disassembly Note
Snap Ring
1. Install the SST in the reverse clutch as shown.
2. Compress the return spring.
3. Remove the snap ring.
4. Remove the SST, and remove the return spring and spring retainer.
Reverse Clutch Piston
1. Set the reverse clutch onto the oil pump.
2. Remove the reverse clutch piston by applying compressed air through the fluid passage.
Air pressure: 390 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi) max.
Inspection
Drive Plate
1. Measure the facing thickness in several places and calculate the average valve.
Standard: 1.6 mm (0.063 inch)
Minimum: 1.4 mm (0.055 inch)
2. If not within the specification, replace the drive plates.
Reverse Clutch Piston
1. Verify that there in no air leakage when applying compressed air through the oil hole opposite the return spring.
2. Verify that there is air flow when applying compressed air through the oil hole on the return spring side.
Air pressure: 390 kPa (4.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi max.
3. Replace the reverse clutch piston if damage or malfunctioning.
Assembly Procedure
1. Install the reverse clutch piston.
1. Apply ATF to the inner and outer faces of the seals and install them to the reverse clutch piston.
Seal ring inner diameter
Inner seal: 63.9 mm (2.516 inch)
Outer seal: 123.5 mm (4.862 inch)
CAUTION: Apply even pressure to the perimeter of the clutch piston when installing it to avoid damaging the inner seal and outer seal.
If the piston cannot be turned by hand, remove it and check for damage to the seal ring.
2. Install the clutch piston into the reverse clutch drum by turning it evenly and gradually.
2. Install the return spring.
3. Install the spring retainer.
4. Install the SST in the reverse clutch as shown.
5. Compress the return spring.
6. Install the snap ring.
7. Remove the SST.
8. Install the two dish plates as shown.
9. Install the drive and driven plates in the following order.
Driven-Drive-Driven-Driven-Drive-Driven
10. Install the retaining plate.
11. Install the snap ring.
12. Measure the reverse clutch clearance.
1. Measure the clearance between the retaining plate and the snap ring.
2. If the clearance is not within the specification, adjust it by selecting a proper retaining plate from bel6w.
Reverse clutch clearance: 0.5 - 0.8 mm (0.020 - 0.031 inch)
13. Check the clutch operation by applying compressed air through the fluid passages shown.
Air pressure: 390 kPa 14.0 kgf/cm2, 57 psi) max.
14. Set the reverse clutch onto the oil pump.
