Bearing Preload

BEARING PRELOAD
Preparation

SST

Adjustment

1. Use the SSTs shown to measure and adjust the differential side bearing preload.

Procedure

1. Remove the bearing race and adjustment shims from the transaxle case by using the SST.

2. Install the bearing race to the converter housing by using the SST.

3. Turn the SST (selector) to eliminate the gap indicated by the arrow.
4. Set the SST (selector) to transaxle case.

5. Set the bearing race and differential assembly on the SST (selector).
6. Set the SST (collars) in the positions shown.

7. Set the converter housing on the transaxle case.
8. Tighten the SST (bolts).

Tightening torque: 38 - 51 Nm (3.8 - 5.3 kgf-m, 28 - 38 ft. lbs.)

9. Turn the SST (selector) to increase the clearance (arrow) by using the SST (bars), until it no longer turns.
10. Turn the selector in the opposite direction until the preload is eliminated (gap is reduced).

NOTE: Check that each shaft turns smoothly.

11. Expand the SST (selector) until it no longer turns by the SST (bars).

12. Measure the gap around the circumference of the SST (selector) by using a feeler gauge.
13. Select a maximum of three adjustment shims to equal the measurement clearance plus 0.15 mm (0.006 inch).

14. Remove the converter housing and SST (selector, collars and bolts).
15. Install the required shim(s) and install the bearing race into the transaxle case by using the SST.

16. Install the differential to the transaxle case.
17. Install the converter housing.

Tightening torque: 27 - 30 Nm (2.8 - 3.1 kgf-m, 21 - 22 ft. lbs.)

18. Check that the preload is within the specification. If not, return to step (1).

Preload: 7.9 - 11.7 Nm (80 - 120 kgf-cm, 70 - 104 inch lbs.)
Reading on pull scale: 79 - 117 Nm (8.0 - 12.0 kgf, 18 - 26 ft. lbs.)

19. Remove the converter housing.

Idler Gear Shim Adjustment

1. Use the SSTs shown below to measure and adjust the shim of idler gear.

2. Measure the distance between the counter shaft and the transaxle case as shown.
1. Install the SST (body B) to the counter shaft.
2. Set the SST (body A) onto the transaxle case.

3. Install the SST (nut).
4. Secure the SSTs (body A, B).

5. Remove the SST (nut).
6. Remove the SSTs (body A,B) as an assembly.
7. Measure the distance (a) by using a dial gauge, measure 3 places and record the average valve.

3. Measure the space between the idler gear tip and the bearing race.
1. Install the SST (body B) on the idler gear tip.
2. Install the SST (body A) onto the bearing race.
3. Secure the SSTs (body A,B).

4. Remove the SSTs (body A,B) as an assembly.
5. Measure the distance @ by using a dial gauge, measure 3 places and record the average valve.

6. Select the appropriate shim(s) by using the following formula.

If A is lower than B: a-b-0.08= required shim width
If A is higher than B: a+b-0.08= required shim width
