Electronic Spark Advance (ESA) Control System

1. Turn off following loads.
- Power steering
- A/C




2. Connect the SST (timing light) to the ignition timing inspecting harness with the arrow on its cramp facing the connector.

CAUTION: Connecting the wrong data link connector terminal may possibly cause a malfunction. Carefully connect the specified terminal only.




3. Using a jumper wire to turn on the test mode, perform the following:
- Short the DLC terminal TEN to body GND using a jumper wire.

4. Start the engine and verify that the ignition timing retards as the engine warms up.
- If not as specified, inspect the PCM terminal 3Q (ECT sensor) voltage.
5. Disconnect the SST (system selector).
6. Verify that the engine is completely warmed up.




7. Increase the engine speed and verify that the ignition advances accordingly.
- If not as specified, inspect the voltage at following terminals
- PCM terminal 3E (MAF sensor)
- PCM terminals 4AH and 4AL (CKP sensor)
