Pinpoint Test O: The Traction Control Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) receives the traction control data from the ABS module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The traction control indicator flashes when the vehicle traction control is in active mode or is being controlled by the ABS module. The traction control off indicator turns on steady if a fault condition exists in the traction control system. The IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) monitors the traction control message from the ABS module and either flashes the traction control indicator or turns it on steady depending on the condition. If the traction control message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC U0121:00 in continuous memory and defaults the traction control indicator on.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Traction control concern

- ABS module

- IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

PINPOINT TEST O : THE TRACTION CONTROL INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

O1 CARRY OUT THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DataLogger.

- Enter the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) active command mode and select the traction control indicator (TC/IVD/RSCLMP) active command. Command the traction control active indicator on and off while observing the traction control indicator.

Does the traction control indicator illuminate when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
GO to O2
No
INSTALL a new IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster). REFER to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) . TEST the system for normal operation.

O2 CHECK THE TRACTION CONTROL INPUT TO THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster)

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) DataLogger.

- Select the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) traction control indicator PID (STAB_CTRL_SW).

- Monitor the traction control PID while pressing and releasing the traction control disable switch.

Does the traction control PID read RELEASED when the button is released and DEPRESSED when the button is pressed?

Yes
GO to O3.

No
REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems to diagnose the traction control system cannot be disabled.

O3 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded DTCs from the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
For DTC P174F:23, REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems.

For DTC U0121:00, GO to Pinpoint Test AT. Pinpoint Test AT: DTC U0121:00

For all other DTCs, REFER to DTC Charts. Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes

No
GO to O4.

O4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM THE ABS MODULE SELF-TEST

- Check for recorded DTCs from the ABS module self-test.

Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems.

No
If the traction control indicator is never on, the system is operating normally.

If the traction control is always on, INSTALL a new ABS module. TEST the system for normal operation.
