Pinpoint Test A: The Parking Aid Is Inoperative/Does Not Operate Correctly
Normal Operation
The front parking aid system (if equipped) is enabled when the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the DRIVE (D) gear is selected. The Parking Aid Module (PAM) receives a transmission selector input from the PCM through the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). A reference voltage and signal return is supplied to the parking aid sensors from the PAM (Parking Aid Module). The PAM (Parking Aid Module) receives an input signal from each individual parking aid sensor. The system can be disabled through the message center which is part of the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).
The rear parking aid system is enabled when the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the REVERSE (R) gear is selected. The Parking Aid Module (PAM) receives a reverse gear input from the PCM through the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN). A reference voltage and signal return is supplied to the parking aid sensors from the PAM (Parking Aid Module). The PAM (Parking Aid Module) receives an input signal from each individual parking aid sensor. The system can be disabled through the message center which is part of the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Parking aid sensor alignment
- Bumper cover
- PAM (Parking Aid Module)
PINPOINT TEST A : THE PARKING AID IS INOPERATIVE/DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.
A1 CHECK THE DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND PAM (Parking Aid Module) SELF-TESTS
- Check the PAM (Parking Aid Module) DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
Are any PAM (Parking Aid Module) DTCs recorded?
Yes
REFER to DTC Charts. Parking Aid
No
GO to A2.
A2 CHECK THE PARKING AID SENSORS FOR CORRECT ALIGNMENT
NOTE: If the vehicle was in a collision, the parking aid sensors may not be aligned correctly.
NOTE: The bumper must be clean and free of ice in order to operate correctly.
- Check the front and rear bumpers and parking aid sensors for correct alignment and signs of collision damage.
Are the bumpers alignment and parking aid sensor alignment correct?
Yes
If the parking aid is inoperative only with DRIVE (D) gear selected, GO to A3.
If the parking aid is inoperative only with REVERSE (R) gear selected, GO to A4.
No
REALIGN or INSTALL a new front or rear bumper or align sensors. If the vehicle was in a collision, further body work may be required to bring the parking aid sensors into correct alignment.
A3 CHECK FOR CORRECT DRIVE GEAR INPUT
- Apply the parking brake.
- Ignition ON.
- Select DRIVE.
- Check the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) message center PRNDL indicator.
Does DRIVE (D) appear in the message center?
Yes
GO to A6.
No
GO to A5.
A4 CHECK FOR CORRECT REVERSE GEAR INPUT
- Apply the parking brake.
- Ignition ON.
- Select REVERSE.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: PAM (Parking Aid Module) DataLogger.
- Monitor the PAM (Parking Aid Module) TRANSGR PID.
Does the PID indicate the transaxle is in reverse?
Yes
GO to A6.
No
GO to A5.
A5 CHECK THE PCM FOR DIGITAL TR (Transmission Range) SENSOR DTCs
- Check the PCM for DTCs P0705, P0706, P0708 and P0709.
Are any of these DTCs present?
Yes
REFER to Automatic Transmission/Transaxle &/or Transmission Control Systems to continue diagnosis of the digital Transmission Range (TR) sensor.
No
INSTALL a new PAM (Parking Aid Module). REFER to Parking Aid Module (PAM) . TEST the system for normal operation.
A6 VERIFY THE PAM (Parking Aid Module) OPERATION
- Test the parking aid system operation.
- Carry out the azimuth system check. Refer to Azimuth System Check .
- Carry out the elevation system check. Refer to Elevation System Check .
Does the parking aid system pass at least one of the above system checks?
Yes
GO to A7.
No
GO to A8.
A7 MONITOR THE PAM (Parking Aid Module) DISTANCE PIDs
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Parking Aid PID.
- Monitor the PAM (Parking Aid Module) distance PIDs while moving a test object into and out of the azimuth field directly behind each of the sensors:

Do the PID readings correspond to the approximate distance between sensor and test object?
Yes
GO to A8.
No
INSTALL a new sensor(s) for the one in question. REFER to Parking Aid Sensor - Front or Parking Aid Sensor - Rear . CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.
A8 CHECK FOR CORRECT PAM (Parking Aid Module) OPERATION
- Disconnect the PAM (Parking Aid Module) connector.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect the PAM (Parking Aid Module) connector and make sure it seats correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new PAM (Parking Aid Module). REFER to Parking Aid Module (PAM) . TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
