Removal and Installation
WARNING: Use of any other than approved DOT 3 motor vehicle brake fluid will cause permanent damage to brake components and will render the brakes inoperative. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING: Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If brake fluid contacts eyes, flush eyes with running water for 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists. If taken internally, drink water and induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
CAUTION: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash it with water.
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
2. Remove the degas bottle. For additional information, refer to Cooling System.
3. Disconnect the anti-lock brake system (ABS) module electrical connector.
4. Disconnect the brake tube fittings.
^ To install, tighten to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
5. Remove the hydraulic control unit (HCU) bracket nut.
^ To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
6. Remove the hydraulic control unit (HCU) bracket bolt.
^ To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
7. Remove the hydraulic control unit (HCU) bracket stud.
^ To install, tighten to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
8. Remove the HCU and bracket.
9. Remove the HCU bracket-to-HCU bolt and remove the bracket.
^ To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.).
10. NOTE: Make sure the HCU and ABS module are clean and free of any brake fluid or foreign material before separating the components.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
^ Bleed the brake system.
