Removal and Installation
Steering GearSpecial Tool(s)
1. WARNING: The electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting or jacking an air suspension vehicle. This can accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located below the glove box in the lower right of the passenger foot well. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in the shifting of the vehicle during these operations.
Turn the air suspension switch to the OFF position
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column shaft to rotate while the intermediate shaft is disconnected or damage to the clock spring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clock spring must be removed and recentered.
Remove the components in the order indicated in the following illustration and table
4. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
5. Fill, purge and leak test the system.
Item 5: Sector Shaft Pitman Arm Removal Note
1. Use the special too] to separate the steering sector shaft arm drag link.
2. Mark a reference point between the steering gear sector shaft and the steering gear housing.
3. Use the special tool to remove the steering gear sector shaft arm.
Item 9: Steering Gear Hoses Installation Note
1. Install a new seal on the hose fittings at the power steering gear.
^ Remove and discard the original seal.
^ Stretch the seal over the special tool until it is large enough to slip over the tube nut.
Item 15: Tie-Rod End-Outer Removal Note
1. Mark a reference point from the tie-rod end to the front wheel spindle tie-rod adjusting sleeve.
2. Use the special tool to separate the tie-rod end.
Item 18: Tie-Rod End-Inner Removal Note
1. On 4x2 vehicles, use the special tool to separate the tie-rod end.
