P0023
1UR-FSE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0013, P0023: Camshaft Position "B" Actuator Circuit / Open (Bank 1)
P0023 - Camshaft Position "B" Actuator Circuit / Open (Bank 2)
DESCRIPTION
This DTC is designed to detect opens or shorts in the camshaft oil control valve (OCV) circuit. If the OCV's duty-cycle is excessively high or low while the engine is running, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and set the DTC.
The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system adjusts the exhaust valve timing to improve the driveability. The engine oil pressure turns the camshaft actuator to adjust the valve timing. The OCV is a solenoid valve and switches the engine oil line. The valve moves when the ECM applies the 12 volts to the solenoid. The ECM changes the energizing time to the solenoid (duty-cycle) in accordance with the camshaft position, crankshaft position, throttle position, etc.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
This DTC is designed to detect opens or shorts in the camshaft oil control valve (OCV) circuit. If the OCV's duty-cycle is excessively high or low while the engine is running, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and set the DTC.

COMPONENT OPERATING RANGE
CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure) Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
4. Turn the engine switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
5. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
6. Wait 5 seconds [A].
7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
8. Read the DTCs [B].
HINT
- If a DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
10. Input the DTC: P0013 or P0023.
11. Check the DTC judgment result.
HINT
If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
12. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or N/A and no DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
HINT
- If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT
- If DTC P0013 is displayed, check the bank 1 VVT system for exhaust side circuit.
- Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.
*: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transmission.
- If DTC P0023 is displayed, check the bank 2 VVT system for exhaust side circuit.
- Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
1. CHECK DTC (DTC P0013 OR P0023)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Clear DTC after recording the freeze frame data and DTC.
(c) Turn the engine switch off.
(d) Allow the engine to idle and check DTC.
(e) Check that P0013 or P0023 is present.
OK:
P0013 or P0023 is present
NG -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS Check for Intermittent Problems
OK -- Continue to next step.
2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect the E12 or E17 OCV connector.
(b) Remove the OCV Removal.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance:
NG -- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OCV - ECM)
(a) Disconnect the E12 or E17 OCV connector.
(b) Disconnect the E2 or E4 ECM connector.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance (check for open):
Standard resistance (check for short):
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- REPLACE ECM Removal
