P0013

2GR-FSE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0013, P0023: Camshaft Position "B" Actuator Circuit / Open (Bank 1)
P0023 - Camshaft Position "B" Actuator Circuit / Open (Bank 2)

DESCRIPTION

This DTC is designed to detect opens or shorts in the camshaft oil control valve (OCV) circuit. If the OCV's duty-cycle is excessively high or low while the engine is running, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and set the DTC.

The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system adjusts the intake valve and exhaust valve timing to improve the driveability. The engine oil pressure turns the camshaft actuator to adjust the valve timing. The OCV is a solenoid valve and switches the engine oil line. The valve moves when the ECM applies 12 V to the solenoid. The ECM changes the energizing time to the solenoid (duty-cycle) in accordance with the camshaft position, crankshaft position, throttle position, etc.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

This DTC is designed to detect opens or shorts in the camshaft oil control valve (OCV) circuit. If the OCV's duty-cycle is excessively high or low while the engine is running, the ECM will illuminate the MIL and set the DTC.

TYPICAL MALFUNCTION THRESHOLDS

COMPONENT OPERATING RANGE

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.

3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).

4. Turn the engine switch off and wait for 30 seconds.

5. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.

6. Wait 5 seconds [A].

7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.

8. Read the DTC [B].

HINT
- If a DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

10. Input the DTC: P0013 or P0023.

11. Check the DTC judgment result.

HINT
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
- If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform step [A] again.

12. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

13. Check the DTC judgment result.

HINT
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

14. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

HINT
- If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT
- If DTC P0013 is displayed, check the bank 1 VVT system for exhaust side circuit.
- If DTC P0023 is displayed, check the bank 2 VVT system for exhaust side circuit.
- Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes No. 1 cylinder*.
*: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transmission.
- Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include No. 1 cylinder.
- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction Freeze Frame Data.

PROCEDURE

1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE)

(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.

(b) Start the engine and turn the Techstream on.

(c) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 2).

(d) Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve (OCV) using the Techstream.

OK:

NG -- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (OCV FOR EXHAUST SIDE OF BANK 1 AND BANK 2)

OK -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS

2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (OCV FOR EXHAUST SIDE OF BANK 1 AND BANK 2)

(a) Disconnect the E52 or E62 OCV connector.

(b) Remove the OCV.

(c) Measure the resistance between the terminals of the OCV.

Standard resistance:

6.9 to 7.9 Ohms at 20°C (68°F)

(d) Reinstall the OCV.

NG -- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (OCV FOR EXHAUST SIDE)
OK -- Continue to next step.

3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OCV FOR EXHAUST SIDE - ECM)

(a) Disconnect the E52 or E62 OCV connector.

(b) Disconnect the E6 or E8 ECM connector.

(c) Measure the resistance.

Standard resistance (check for open):

Standard resistance (check for short):

(d) Reconnect the OCV connector.

(e) Reconnect the ECM connectors.

NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR

OK -- REPLACE ECM
