P2016
4GR-FSE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P2014,P2016,P2017: Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor / Switch Circuit (Bank 1)
P2017 - Intake Manifold Runner Position Sensor / Switch Circuit High (Bank 1)
DESCRIPTION
The Swirl Control Valve (SCV) position sensor is a non-contact type.
The position sensor measures the opening angle of the SCV. The sensor is reliable and accurate, as it is electrically controlled by Hall elements.
The ECM's IAC1 terminal voltage increases in correlation with the opening angle of the SCV. When the SCV is fully closed, approximately 0.6 V is applied to the IAC1 terminal. When the SCV is fully open, approximately 3.6 V is applied to the IAC1 terminal.
When the output voltage of the IAC1 terminal deviates from the standard range, the ECM determines that a malfunction has occurred in the position sensor and outputs a DTC.
HINT
After confirming DTC P2014, P2016 or P2017, use Techstream to confirm the IAC Sensor Voltage (SCV position sensor output voltage) from Powertrain / Engine / Data List.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The ECM's IAC1 terminal voltage increases in correlation with the opening angle of the swirl control valve. When the swirl control valve is fully closed, approximately 0.6 V is applied to the IAC1 terminal. When the swirl control valve is fully open, approximately 3.6 V is applied to the IAC1 terminal.
When the output voltage of the IAC1 terminal deviates from the standard range, the ECM determines that a malfunction has occurred in the position sensor and stores a DTC.

COMPONENT OPERATING RANGE
CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
- Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure) DTC Check / Clear.
- Turn the engine switch off and wait for 30 seconds.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
- Allow 0.5 seconds or more to elapse [A].
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
- Read the DTC [B].
HINT
- If a DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
- Input the DTC: P2014, P2016 or P2017.
- Check the DTC judgment result.
HINT
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
- If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform step [A] again.
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
- Check the DTC judgment result.
HINT
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
- If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs DTC Check / Clear.
HINT
- If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT
- If different DTCs that are related to a different system are output simultaneously while terminal E2 is used as a ground terminal, terminal E2 may be open.
- Read freeze frame data using Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air/fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction Freeze Frame Data.
PROCEDURE
1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE SCV)
(a) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the tester on.
(c) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the SCV Duty Ratio / All Data / IAC Sensor Voltage.
(d) Check the output voltage of IAC Sensor Voltage while changing Control the SCV Duty Ratio from -100 to 100% (or from 100 to -100%) using the Techstream.
Standard:
The voltage output of IAC Sensor Voltage remains between 0.2 to 4.8 V while Control the SCV Duty Ratio is driven from -100 to 100% (or from 100 to -100%).
OK -- CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P2014, P2016 AND/OR P2017 ARE OUTPUT AGAIN)
NG -- Continue to next step.
2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (SCV POSITION SENSOR - ECM)
(a) Disconnect the E3 and E6 ECM connectors.
(b) Disconnect the E56 SCV position sensor connector.
(c) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance (Check for open):
Standard resistance (Check for short):
(d) Reconnect the SCV position sensor connector.
(e) Reconnect the ECM connector.
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- Continue to next step.
3. INSPECT ECM (VC VOLTAGE)
(a) Disconnect the E56 SCV position sensor connector.
(b) Turn the engine switch on (IG).
(c) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard voltage:
(d) Reconnect the SCV position sensor connector.
NG -- REPLACE ECM Removal
OK -- Continue to next step.
4. REPLACE INTAKE MANIFOLD
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
5. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P2014, P2016 AND/OR P2017 ARE OUTPUT AGAIN)
(a) Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the tester on.
(c) Clear DTCs.
(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
(e) Read DTCs.
Result:
B -- END
A -- REPLACE ECM Removal
