Engine Control System: SFI System
4GR-FSE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0500: Vehicle Speed Sensor "A"
P0500 - Vehicle Speed Sensor "A"
DESCRIPTION
The speed sensor detects the wheel speed and sends the appropriate signals to the skid control ECU. The skid control ECU converts these wheel speed signals into a 4-pulse signal and outputs it to the ECM via the combination meter. The ECM determines the vehicle speed based on the frequency of these pulse signals.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
Manual Transaxle Models:
The ECM assumes that the vehicle is being driven while the vehicle speed sensor signal is being transmitted by the combination meter. If there is no signal from the No. 1 vehicle speed sensor despite this condition being met, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction in the sensor. The ECM then illuminates the MIL and sets the DTC.

TYPICAL MALFUNCTION THRESHOLDS
CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
- Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure) DTC Check / Clear.
- Turn the engine switch off and wait for 30 seconds.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on [A].
- Start the engine.
- Drive the vehicle at 15 mph (24 km/h) or more for a total of 30 seconds or more [B].
CAUTION:
When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed and traffic laws.
- Stop the vehicle.
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending.
- Read the pending DTC [C].
HINT
- If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
- Input the DTC: P0500.
- Check the DTC judgment result.
HINT
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
- If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform step [B] again.
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
- Check the DTC Judgment result.
HINT
- If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
- If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
- If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs DTC Check / Clear.
HINT
- If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT
Read freeze frame data using Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air/fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction Freeze Frame Data.
PROCEDURE
1. INSPECT SPEEDOMETER (METER OPERATION)
(a) Drive the vehicle and check if operation of the speedometer in the combination meter is normal.
HINT
The vehicle speed sensor is operating normally if the speedometer display is normal.
NG -- CHECK SPEEDOMETER CIRCUIT
OK -- Continue to next step.
2. INSPECT ECM
(a) Shift the lever to the neutral position.
(b) Jack up the vehicle.
(c) Turn the engine switch on (IG).
(d) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below as the wheel is turned slowly.
Standard:
HINT
The output voltage should fluctuate up and down similarly to the diagram on the left when the wheel is turned slowly.
NG -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
OK -- REPLACE ECM Removal
