AA80E Automatic Transmission: Automatic Transmission System
AA80E AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM: P0711: Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor "A" Performance
DTC P0711 - Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor "A" Performance
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The transmission fluid pressure control circuit's fluid temperature is detected using the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) temperature sensor, which is built onto the valve body. Depending on the fluid temperature, a signal is then input into the TCM.
The TCM applies a voltage to the temperature sensor through TCM terminal OIL.
The sensor resistance changes with the ATF temperature. As the temperature becomes higher, the sensor resistance decreases.
One terminal of the sensor is grounded so that the sensor resistance decreases and the voltage decreases as the temperature becomes higher.
The TCM calculates the ATF temperature based on the voltage signal.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The ATF temperature sensor converts the ATF temperature to an electrical resistance value. Based on the resistance, the TCM determines the ATF temperature and detects an open or short in the ATF temperature circuit or a fault in the ATF temperature sensor.
After running the vehicle for a certain period, the ATF temperature should increase. If the ATF temperature is below 20°C (68°F) after running the vehicle for a certain period, the TCM interprets this as a fault, and turns on the MIL, and stores the DTC.
When the ATF temperature is 110°C (230°F) or more and engine coolant temperature reaches 60°C (140°F) after cold start, the TCM also determines this as a fault, turns on the MIL, and stores the DTC.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
NOTICE:
- If DTCs P0711 and P2610 are output simultaneously, confirm that the ATF temperature is as specified in "Normal Condition" using the Techstream first. When the ATF temperature is as specified in "Normal Condition", perform troubleshooting for DTC P2610 SFI System.
- In the table below, the value listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values.
HINT: Using the Techstream to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time.
1 Warm up the engine.
2 Turn the engine switch off.
3 Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
4 Turn the engine switch on (IG).
5 Turn the Techstream on.
6 Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Data List.
7 According to the display on the Techstream, read the Data List.
TCM
HINT:
- When DTC P0712 is output and the Techstream shows 150°C (302°F) or more, there is a short circuit.
- When DTC P0713 is output and the Techstream shows -40°C (-40°F), there is an open circuit. Check the temperature displayed on the Techstream in order to check if a malfunction exists.
HINT: If a circuit related to the ATF temperature sensor becomes open, P0713 is set in approximately 0.5 seconds. It is not necessary to inspect the circuit when P0711 is set.
PROCEDURE
1. CHECK DTC OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0711)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the engine switch on (IG).
(c) Turn the Techstream on.
(d) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Trouble Codes.
(e) Read the DTCs using the Techstream.
Result:
HINT: If any other codes besides P0711 are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.
B -- GO TO DTC CHART
A -- Continue to next step.
2. CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL
(a) Check the transmission fluid level AA80E Automatic Transmission.
OK:
Automatic transmission fluid level is correct.
NG -- ADJUST FLUID LEVEL
OK -- REPLACE TRANSMISSION WIRE (ATF TEMPERATURE SENSOR)
