Crack or Pop Noise from Integration Panel/Radio Assembly

Service Category

Applicability

Introduction

Some 2006 - 2008 model year IS models may exhibit a intermittent "crack" or "pop" type noise from the integration panel/radio assembly when the temperature inside the panel warms or cools from ambient temperature, usually caused when the heater or A/C system is used. Cushions have been created to insulate the expansion and contraction of the plastic and metal parts in the integration panel. Follow the procedure in this TSIB to install these cushions (heater control protectors) in the integration panel.

Production Change Information

This TSIB applies to vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown.

Repair Procedure

PRECAUTIONS

^ Prepare a work surface with a clean soft cloth/blanket to prevent damage to the instrument panel and the integration panel components.

^ Wash your hands thoroughly and dry completely before handling/disassembling the integration panel (this will prevent oil from hands or foreign materials from contaminating the integration panel components).

1. Remove the integration panel assembly using the clock removal Repair Manual procedure.

Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

^ 2006 / 2007 / 2008 IS 250:
Vehicle Interior - Meter/Gauge/Display - "Other System: Clock: Removal"

^ 2006 / 2007 / 2008 IS 350:

Vehicle Interior - Meter/Gauge/Display - "Other System: Clock: Removal"

Ensure that you discharge all static electricity BEFORE you handle the printed circuit board by touching a metal surface with bare hands.

2. Remove the 4 screws that hold the printed circuit board to the integration panel.

3. Hold the printed circuit board on the sides and by the connector while turning over.

NOTICE

^ Keep the integration panel facing down. (Turning the integration panel over may cause an abnormal fit condition of the blower switch.)

^ Carefully place the printed circuit board with the connector panel facing down and the LCD panels facing up on a soft protected work surface.

^ Do NOT directly touch the IC or the circuits on the printed circuit board.

^ Do NOT touch the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) when handling the printed circuit board. (It can become stained with fingerprints).

4. Paste cushions in the 9 locations marked in Figure 4 (one cushion per spot). Follow the steps below for cushion location and installation.

A. Remove a cushion from the backing paper.

B. Pass a 2.5 mm hexagon wrench (or similar tool) through the hole in the cushion.

C. Carefully slide the cushion on to the shaft of the hexagon wrench noting the direction of the adhesive side of the cushion. (The adhesive side should be facing down.)

D. Place the hexagon wrench into one of the 9 holes indicated previously in Figure 4.

E. Center/align the cushion around the hole using the hexagon wrench as a guide.

F. Using a pair of small pliers (or similar tool) carefully paste the cushion to the printed circuit board and pull the hexagon wrench from the hole.

G. Repeat this process for the remaining 8 holes on this side of the printed circuit board.

5. Carefully place the printed circuit board back into the integration panel in the original position (with the LCD facing downward).

NOTICE

^ Do NOT directly touch the IC or the circuits on the printed circuit board.

^ Do NOT touch the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) when handling the printed circuit board. (It can become stained with fingerprints.)

^ Ensure that NO foreign material or dirt have contaminated the printed circuit board before reinstallation into the integration panel.

6. Install the 4 screws that hold the printed circuit board to the integration panel.

7. Paste cushions in the 9 locations marked with red circles in Figure 12 using the cushion location procedures.

HINT

Only 1 cushion per spot.

NOTE

At this point, you should have installed 18 cushions.

8. Connect the Flexible Flat Cable (FFC) to the FFC connector and push the lock down.

NOTICE

^ Check that the FFC is set in the correct direction after the repair procedure (FFC must be straight and not twisted).

^ Ensure that NO foreign material or dirt have contaminated the printed circuit board before reinstalling it to the integration panel.

9. Fit the integration panel cover over the printed circuit board and tighten the 9 screws.

HINT

Tighten in the order shown in Figure 14. Be careful to NOT overtighten the screws.

10. Reinstall the integration panel assembly per the clock installation instructions.

Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

^ 2006 / 2007 / 2008 IS 250:
Vehicle Interior - Meter/Gauge/Display - "Other System: Clock: Installation"

^ 2006 / 2007 / 2008 IS 350:
Vehicle Interior - Meter/Gauge/Display - "Other System: Clock: Installation"

11. Complete a function check of the integration panel to confirm proper operation after reassembly and reinstallation.
