Rear Shock Absorber With Coil Spring

REAR SHOCK ABSORBER WITH COIL SPRING

REMOVAL

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.

1. REMOVE TONNEAU COVER STOPPER SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
2. REMOVE TONNEAU COVER STOPPER SUB-ASSEMBLY RH
3. REMOVE REAR FLOOR FINISH PLATE
4. REMOVE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT FLOOR MAT
5. REMOVE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT TRIM COVER LH
6. REMOVE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT TRIM COVER RH
7. REMOVE SPARE WHEEL COVER ASSEMBLY
8. REMOVE TOOL BOX COVER
9. REMOVE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT TRIM COVER REAR SUB-ASSEMBLY
10. REMOVE TONNEAU COVER ASSEMBLY
11. REMOVE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT TRIM COVER INNER LOWER
12. REMOVE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT TRIM COVER FRONT
13. REMOVE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT TRIM COVER SIDE LH
14. REMOVE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT TRIM COVER SIDE RH
15. REMOVE WHEEL HUB ORNAMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Remove the 10 bolts and ornament.
16. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
(a) Remove the 5 nuts and wheel.





17. DISCONNECT REAR NO.2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY
(a) Matchmark Place matchmarks on the camber adjusting cam and No. 2 suspension arm.





(b) Fix the bolt on the rear suspension member side, and loosen the nut labeled A.

NOTICE: Do not remove the nut.

(c) Fix the bolt and remove the nut labeled B. Then disconnect the rear stabilizer link and road sensing valve sensor bracket from the No. 2 suspension arm.
(d) Fix the nut and remove the bolt labeled C. Then disconnect the shock absorber's lower end from the No.2 suspension arm.





18. REMOVE REAR SHOCK ABSORBER WITH COIL
(a) Loosen the lock nut.

NOTICE: Do not remove the lock nut.

(b) Remove the 3 nuts.





(c) Remove the 2 bolts and shock absorber with coil spring.

DISASSEMBLY

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.





1. REMOVE REAR COIL SPRING LH
(a) Using SST, compress the coil spring.
SST 09727-30021

NOTICE: Do not use an impact wrench. It will damage the SST.

(b) Remove the lock nut.
(c) Remove the washer, cushion, collar, suspension support, upper insulator, lower cup, cushion, spring bumper and coil spring.

INSPECTION





1. INSPECT REAR SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Compress and extend the shock absorber rod. Check that there is no abnormal resistance or unusual operation sound. If there is any abnormality, replace the shock absorber with a new one.

NOTICE: When disposing of the shock absorber, see DISPOSAL.

REASSEMBLY

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.





1. INSTALL REAR COIL SPRING LH
(a) Using SST, compress the coil spring.
SST 09727-30021

NOTICE: Do not use an impact wrench. It will damage the SST.

(b) SST Install the coil spring to the shock absorber. Fit the lower end of the coil spring into the recess of the spring seat of the shock absorber.
(c) Install the spring bumper, lower cup, cushion, collar, upper insulator, suspension support, cushion and washer to the shock absorber. Temporarily install a new lock nut.

INSTALLATION

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.
^ A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart.





1. INSTALL REAR SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Install the shock absorber to the lower suspension arm.
(b) Rotate the suspension support so that the rod and a bolt on the suspension support are aligned with the lower shock absorber as shown in the illustration.
(c) Remove SST.
SST 09727-30021

HINT: After removing the SST, recheck the direction of the suspension support.





2. TEMPORARILY INSTALL REAR SHOCK ABSORBER WITH COIL SPRING
(a) Temporarily install the spring support reinforcement with the 3 nuts.





(b) Install the 2 bolts.
Torque: 18 N*m (184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf)





3. TEMPORARILY INSTALL REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Set the No. 2 suspension arm to the rear suspension member side. Then set the bolt and nut labeled A, and tighten the nut by hand.

HINT: After stabilizing the suspension, tighten the nut.

(b) Set the rear stabilizer link and road sensing valve sensor bracket to the No. 2 suspension arm. Then set the bolt and nut labeled B, and tighten the nut by hand.
(c) Set the shock absorber's lower end to the No. 2 suspension arm. Then set the nut and bolt labeled C, and tighten the bolt by hand.
(d) Using the bolt and nut labeled D, install the No. 1 camber adjusting cam, No. 2 camber adjusting cam and No. 2 suspension arm to the axle carrier.
4. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
(a) Install the wheel with the 5 nuts.
Torque: 103 N*m (1,050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf)
5. STABILIZE SUSPENSION
(a) Lower the vehicle.
(b) Press down on the vehicle several times to stabilize the suspension.





6. TIGHTEN REAR SHOCK ABSORBER WITH COIL SPRING
(a) Tighten the 3 nuts.
Torque: 64 N*m (650 kgf*cm, 47 ft.*lbf)
(b) Tighten the lock nut.
Torque: 28 N*m (286 kgf*cm, 21 ft.*lbf)
(c) Fix the nut and tighten the bolt.
Torque: 110 N*m (1,120 kgf*cm, 81 ft.*lbf)

NOTICE: Do not tighten the nut.





7. TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Fix the bolt and tighten the nuts labeled A, B and C.
Torque:
30 N*m (306 kgf*cm, 22 ft.*lbf)
110 N*m (1,120 kgf*cm, 81 ft.*lbf)

NOTICE: Do not tighten the bolt.

8. INSTALL WHEEL HUB ORNAMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the ornament with the 10 bolts.
Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf)
9. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
(a) Inspect and adjust the rear wheel alignment.

DISPOSAL





1. DISPOSE OF REAR SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Fully extend the shock absorber rod, and clamp it in a vise at an angle.
(b) Using a drill and similar tool, gradually make a hole in area A and discharge the gas inside of the absorber.

CAUTION:
As metal debris may be blown outward by the gas, you must:
^ Wear protective glasses.
^ Cover the area being cut.


NOTICE: The gas is colorless, odorless and harmless.
