Water Pump: Service and Repair

WATER PUMP

REMOVAL

1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER
3. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
4. REMOVE V-BANK COVER
(a) Remove the 2 nuts and cover.

5. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR CLEANER INLET
(a) Remove the bolt and inlet.

6. REMOVE INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR PIPE
7. REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
8. DISCONNECT NO. 1 RADIATOR HOSE
9. DISCONNECT NO. 2 RADIATOR HOSE
10. DISCONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER INLET TUBE
11. DISCONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE
12. REMOVE RADIATOR ASSEMBLY
13. REMOVE TIMING BELT
(a) Remove the timing belt.





14. REMOVE WATER INLET HOUSING
(a) Disconnect the water by-pass hose and remove the 2 bolts and water inlet housing.
(b) Remove the O-ring from the inlet housing.

15. REMOVE WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY





(a) Remove the 5 bolts, 2 stud bolts and nut.





(b) Using a screwdriver, remove the water pump and gasket.
(c) Remove the O-ring.

INSPECTION





1. INSPECT WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY
(a) Visually check the water drain hole for coolant leakage.
If leakage is found, replace the water pump.
(b) Turn the pulley, and check that the water pump bearing moves smoothly and quietly.
If it moves roughly or noisily, replace the water pump.

INSTALLATION

1. INSTALL WATER PUMP ASSEMBLY





(a) Install a new O-ring to the water by-pass hose.





(b) Install a new gasket and the water pump with the 5 bolts, 2 stud bolts and nut.
Torque: 21 N*m (214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) for bolt 18 N*m (184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf) for nut and stud bolt

2. INSTALL WATER INLET HOUSING
(a) Install a new O-ring.
(b) Apply soapy water to the O-ring.





(c) Apply seal packing to the groove of the water inlet housing as shown in the illustration.

Seal packing: Toyota Genuine seal packing 1282B, Three Bond 1282B or Equivalent
Standard seal diameter: 2 to 3 mm (0.08 to 0.12 in.)

NOTICE:
^ After applying seal packing, install the part within 5 minutes.
^ Be sure to keep the O-ring away from engine oil. The O-ring must be replaced if it contacts engine oil.





(d) Install the water inlet housing with the 2 bolts.

Bolt length:





Torque: 18 N*m (194 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf)
(e) Connect the water by-pass hose.

3. INSTALL TIMING BELT
(a) Install the timing belt.

4. INSTALL RADIATOR ASSEMBLY
5. CONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER OUTLET TUBE
6. CONNECT NO. 1 OIL COOLER INLET TUBE
7. CONNECT NO. 2 RADIATOR HOSE
8. CONNECT NO. 1 RADIATOR HOSE
9. ADD ENGINE COOLANT
10. CHECK FOR ENGINE COOLANT LEAKS
11. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
12. INSTALL INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR PIPE
13. INSTALL NO. 1 AIR CLEANER INLET
(a) Install the air cleaner inlet with the bolt.
Torque: 5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf)

14. INSTALL V-BANK COVER
(a) Install the cover with the 2 nuts.
Torque: 5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf)

15. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER
16. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
17. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
(a) Perform initialization.

NOTICE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
