Thermostat: Service and Repair
THERMOSTATCOMPONENTS:
REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
2. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER
3. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
4. REMOVE V-BANK COVER
(a) Remove the 2 nuts and cover.
5. REMOVE NO. 1 AIR CLEANER INLET
(a) Remove the bolt and inlet.
6. REMOVE INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR PIPE
7. REMOVE WATER INLET
(a) Remove the 3 nuts and water inlet.
8. REMOVE THERMOSTAT
(a) Remove the thermostat and gasket.
INSPECTION
1. INSPECT THERMOSTAT
HINT: The valve opening temperature is stamped on the thermostat.
(a) Immerse the thermostat in water and then gradually heat the water.
(b) Check the valve opening temperature of the thermostat.
Standard valve opening temperature: 80 to 84°C (176 to 183°F)
If the valve opening temperature is not as specified, replace the thermostat.
(c) Check the valve lift.
Standard valve lift: 10 mm (0.39 in.) or more at 95°C (203°F)
If the valve lift is not as specified, replace the thermostat.
(d) Check that the valve is fully closed when the thermostat is at low temperature (below 40°C (104°F)).
If not fully closed, replace the thermostat.
INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL THERMOSTAT
(a) Install a new gasket to the thermostat.
HINT: When installing the thermostat to the gasket, be careful not to deform the gasket. Make sure that the thermostat is properly installed into the groove of the gasket as shown in the illustration.
(b) Insert the thermostat into the water inlet housing with the jiggle valve as shown in the illustration.
HINT: The jiggle valve may be set within 30° of either side of the prescribed position.
2. INSTALL WATER INLET
(a) Install the water inlet with the 3 nuts.
Torque: 19 N*m (194 kgf*cm, 14 ft.*lbf)
3. ADD ENGINE COOLANT
4. CHECK FOR ENGINE COOLANT LEAKS
5. INSTALL INTAKE AIR CONNECTOR PIPE
6. CONNECT NO. 1 AIR CLEANER INLET
(a) Install the inlet with the bolt.
Torque: 5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf)
7. INSTALL V-BANK COVER
(a) Install the cover with the 2 nuts.
Torque: 5.0 N*m (51 kgf*cm, 44 in.*lbf)
8. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER
9. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
10. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
(a) Perform initialization.
NOTICE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
