Steering Gear (W/ VGRS)

STEERING GEAR (w/ VGRS)

COMPONENTS (Part 1):

COMPONENTS (Part 2):

REMOVAL
1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
2. REMOVE COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER RH
3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.

NOTICE: After the engine switch is turned off, the HDD navigation system requires approximately 6 minutes to record various types of memory and settings. As a result, after turning the engine switch off, wait 6 minutes or more before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

4. REMOVE FRONT WHEELS
5. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER
6. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER
7. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER PROTECTOR LOWER
8. DISCONNECT STEERING SLIDING YOKE WITH SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY
9. DISCONNECT TIE ROD ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the clip and nut.
(b) Install 2 spacers (SST spacer B) onto the tie rod assembly LH so that there is a space of approximately 1 mm between the arm and spacers.
SST 09960-20010 (09961-02060)

NOTICE:
^ Make sure to install the spacers (SST spacer B) as the steering knuckle spacer may shift.
^ As SST may become damaged, make sure the space between the arm and spacers is not 1 mm or less.

(c) Using SST, disconnect the tie rod assembly from the steering knuckle.
SST 09960-20010 (09961-02010)

NOTICE:
^ Do not damage the dust cover.
^ As the dust cover may be damaged, adjust SST with the center nut so that the body and crow are the parallel.
^ Make sure to tie the string of SST to the vehicle to prevent SST from dropping.

10. DISCONNECT TIE ROD ASSEMBLY RH

HINT: Use the same procedures described for the LH side.

11. REMOVE POWER STEERING LINK ASSEMBLY
(a) Detach the 3 clips and disconnect the 5 connectors.

(b) Remove the 4 bolts, 4 nuts and power steering link from the front frame and rack housing bracket.

DISASSEMBLY

1. FIX POWER STEERING LINK ASSEMBLY
(a) Using SST, secure the power steering link.
SST 09612-00012

HINT: Tape SST before use.

2. REMOVE TIE ROD ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Put matchmarks on the tie rod LH and steering rack end.
(b) Remove the tie rod LH and lock nut.
3. REMOVE TIE ROD ASSEMBLY RH

HINT: Use the same procedures described for the LH side.

INSPECTION
1. INSPECT TOTAL PRELOAD
(a) Temporarily install the left and right steering rack ends to prevent steering rack overstroke.

(b) Using SST and a torque wrench, inspect the preload.
SST 09616-00011
Preload (turning): 1.5 to 2.5 N*m (15.3 to 25.5 kgf*cm, 13.3 to 22.1 in.*lbf)
If the turning torque is not as specified, replace the power steering link assembly.
2. INSPECT TIE ROD ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Secure the tie rod LH in a vise.
(b) Install the nut to the stud bolt.
(c) Flip the ball joint back and forth 5 times or more.

(d) Using a torque wrench, turn the nut continuously at a rate of 3 to 5 seconds per turn and take the torque reading on the 5th turn.
Turning torque: 0.49 to 3.43 N*m (5.0 to 35 kgf*cm, 4.3 to 30.4 in.*lbf)
If the turning torque is not as specified range, replace the tie rod assembly LH.
3. INSPECT TIE ROD ASSEMBLY RH

HINT: Use the same procedures described for the LH side.

REASSEMBLY

1. TEMPORARILY INSTALL TIE ROD ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Align the matchmarks of the tie rod and rack end, and temporarily install the tie rod with the lock nut.

HINT: After adjusting toe-in, tighten the lock nut.

2. TEMPORARILY INSTALL TIE ROD ASSEMBLY RH

HINT: Use the same procedures described for the LH side.

INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL POWER STEERING LINK ASSEMBLY
(a) Install the power steering link and rack housing bracket to the front frame with the 4 bolts and 4 nuts.
Torque: 70 N*m (714 kgf*cm, 52 ft.*lbf)

(b) Connect the 5 connectors and attach the 3 clips.

2. CONNECT TIE ROD ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the tie rod LH to the steering knuckle with the nut.
Torque: 60 N*m (612 kgf*cm, 44 ft.*lbf)
(b) Install a new clip.
3. CONNECT TIE ROD ASSEMBLY RH

HINT: Use the same procedures described for the LH side.
