Ignition Timing: Testing and Inspection
IGNITION TIMINGINSPECT IGNITION TIMING
(a) Warm up and stop the engine.
HINT: A warmed up engine should have an engine coolant temperature of over 80°C (176°F) and an engine oil temperature of 60°C (140°F), and the engine rpm should be stabilized.
(b) When using the intelligent tester or Techstream:
(1) Connect the intelligent tester or Techstream to the DLC3.
(2) Start the engine and idle it.
(3) Push the intelligent tester or Techstream main switch ON.
(4) Enter the following items:
Intelligent tester - Select: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / PRIMARY / IGN ADVANCE.
Techstream - Select: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Primary / IGN Advance.
HINT: Refer to the intelligent tester or Techstream operator's manual for further details.
Standard ignition timing: 8 to 18° BTDC @ idle
(c) When not using the intelligent tester or Techstream:
(1) Remove the V-bank cover.
(2) Remove the 5 clips and air cleaner inlet cover.
(3) Remove the 4 clips and engine room side cover LH.
(4) Remove the 2 bolts and No. 1 air cleaner inlet.
(5) Disconnect the air cleaner cap (for Bank 1).
(6) Remove the 2 nuts and air cleaner case (for Bank 1).
(7) Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the wire of the ignition connector for No. 1 cylinder.
NOTICE: Use a timing light that detects primary signals.
(8) Using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.
SST 09843-18040
NOTICE:
^ Confirm the terminal numbers before connecting them. Connecting the wrong terminals can damage the engine.
^ When checking the ignition timing, the transmission should be in neutral.
(9) Using a timing light, check the ignition timing.
Standard ignition timing: 8 to 12° BTDC @ idle
(10) Remove SST from the DLC3.
(11) Check the ignition timing.
Standard ignition timing: 8 to 18° BTDC @ idle
(12) Check that the ignition timing advances immediately when the engine speed is increased.
(13) Disconnect the timing light from the engine.
(14) Install the air cleaner case (for Bank 1) with the 2 nuts.
(15) Connect the air cleaner cap (for Bank 1).
(16) Install the No. 1 air cleaner inlet with the 2 bolts.
(17) Install the engine room side cover LH with the 4 clips.
(18) Install the air cleaner inlet cover with the 5 clips.
(19) Install the V-bank cover.
