Rear Axle Hub

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
2. DISCONNECT REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH
3. REMOVE REAR DISC





4. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB BEARING LOOSENESS
(a) Using a dial indicator, check for looseness near the center of the axle hub.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 in.)

NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is set at a right angle to the measurement surface.

If the looseness exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub.





5. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB RUNOUT
(a) Using a dial indicator, check for runout on the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 in.)

NOTICE: Ensure that the dial indicator is set at a right angle to the measurement surface.

If the runout exceeds the maximum, replace the axle hub.

6. INSTALL REAR DISC
7. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
8. CONNECT REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH
9. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 140 N*m (1428 kgf*cm, 103 ft.*lbf)

REMOVAL

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.

1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL





2. REMOVE LOAD SENSING VALVE SENSOR BRACKET
(a) Remove the bolt and load sensing valve sensor bracket from the toe control link sub-assembly.





3. DISCONNECT REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the bolt and nut, and then disconnect the rear stabilizer link assembly LH from the rear No. 2 suspension arm assembly LH.





4. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT
(a) Using SST and a hammer, release the staked part of the rear axle shaft LH nut.
SST 09930-00010

NOTICE: Release the staked part of the nut completely, otherwise the screw of the drive shaft may be damaged.

(b) While applying the brakes, remove the rear axle shaft LH nut.





5. DISCONNECT REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the 2 bolts and separate the rear disc brake caliper assembly.

NOTICE:
^ Hang the caliper with wire or equivalent.
^ Do not damage the brake hose.

6. DISCONNECT SPEED SENSOR REAR LH
7. REMOVE REAR DISC
8. REMOVE NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING
9. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING
10. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET LH
11. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY LH
12. REMOVE NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY LH
13. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER LH
14. DISCONNECT REAR SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH (for Coil suspension)
15. DISCONNECT PNEUMATIC CYLINDER WITH REAR SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH (for Air suspension)





16. REMOVE REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Using a plastic-faced hammer or equivalent, strike the part labeled A from the rear of the vehicle to maintain the clearance at the slide pin area.





(b) Remove the nut, washer, bolt and No. 2 suspension arm from the axle carrier.





(c) Remove the nut, rear suspension attachment sub-assembly, and rear No. 2 suspension toe adjust plate. Then remove the rear No. 2 suspension arm assembly.
17. DISCONNECT REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the nut from the rear No. 1 suspension arm.
(b) Install 2 spacers (SST spacer B) onto the rear No. 1 suspension arm so that there is a space of approximately 1 mm between the arm and spacers.

NOTICE:
^ Make sure to install the spacers (SST spacer B) as the steering knuckle spacer may shift.
^ As SST may become damaged, make sure the space between the arm and spacers is not 1 mm or less.





(c) Using SST, disconnect the rear No. 1 suspension arm from the axle carrier.

NOTICE:
^ Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.
^ As the dust cover may be damaged, adjust SST with the center nut so that the body and crow are parallel.
^ Make sure to tie the string of SST to the vehicle to prevent SST from dropping.

18. DISCONNECT TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the nut on the rear axle carrier side.
(b) Install 2 spacers (SST spacer B) onto the toe control link so that there is a space of approximately 1 mm between the arm and spacers.

NOTICE:
^ Make sure to install the spacers (SST spacer B) as the steering knuckle spacer may shift.
^ As SST may become damaged, make sure the space between the arm and spacers is not 1 mm or less.





(c) Using SST, disconnect the toe control link from the axle carrier.

NOTICE:
^ Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.
^ As the dust cover may be damaged, adjust SST with the center nut so that the body and crow are parallel.
^ Make sure to tie the string of SST to the vehicle to prevent SST from dropping.

19. DISCONNECT REAR UPPER NO. 1 CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the nut on the rear axle carrier side.
(b) Install 2 spacers (SST spacer A) onto the rear upper No. 1 control arm so that there is a space of approximately 1 mm between the arm and spacers.

NOTICE:
^ Make sure to install the spacers (SST spacer A) as the steering knuckle spacer may shift.
^ As SST may become damaged, make sure the space between the arm and spacers is not 1 mm or less.





(c) Using SST, disconnect the upper No. 1 control arm from the axle carrier.

NOTICE:
^ Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.
^ As the dust cover may be damaged, adjust SST with the center nut so that the body and crow are parallel.
^ Make sure to tie the string of SST to the vehicle to prevent SST from dropping.

20. DISCONNECT REAR UPPER NO. 2 CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Remove the nut on the rear axle carrier side.
(b) Install 2 spacers (SST spacer A) onto the rear upper No. 2 control arm so that there is a space of approximately 1 mm between the arm and spacers.

NOTICE:
^ Make sure to install the spacers (SST spacer A) as the steering knuckle spacer may shift.
^ As SST may become damaged, make sure the space between the arm and spacers is not 1 mm or less.





(c) Using SST, disconnect the upper No. 2 control arm from the axle carrier.

NOTICE:
^ Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.
^ As the dust cover may be damaged, adjust SST with the center nut so that the body and crow are parallel.
^ Make sure to tie the string of SST to the vehicle to prevent SST from dropping.

21. REMOVE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Using a plastic-faced hammer, separate the drive shaft from the rear axle carrier sub-assembly.
(b) Remove the rear axle assembly.

NOTICE:
^ Be careful not to damage the boots.
^ Use a wire or an equivalent to keep the rear drive shaft assembly from hanging down.





22. REMOVE REAR NO. 1 WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR LH
(a) Using a screwdriver, remove the bearing dust deflector from the rear axle carrier.

NOTICE: Be careful not to dent or damage the axle carrier, as it is made of aluminum.

23. REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Hold the axle hub and bearing in a vise between aluminum plates.

NOTICE: Do not overtighten the vise.





(b) Remove the 4 bolts and axle hub and bearing from the rear axle carrier.





(c) Remove the 2 nuts, parking brake anchor block, parking brake cable support bracket, and parking brake plate from the rear axle carrier.

INSTALLATION

HINT:
^ Use the same procedures for the RH side and LH side.
^ The procedures listed below are for the LH side.
^ A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart.





1. INSTALL REAR AXLE HUB AND BEARING ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Install the parking brake plate, cable support bracket and parking brake anchor block to the rear axle carrier with the 2 nuts.
Torque: 76 N*m (775 kgf*cm, 56 ft.*lbf)
(b) Hold the axle hub and bearing in a vise between aluminum plates.

NOTICE: Do not overtighten the vise.





(c) Install the axle hub and bearing to the rear axle carrier with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 97 N*m (989 kgf*cm, 72 ft.*lbf)





2. INSTALL REAR NO. 1 WHEEL BEARING DUST DEFLECTOR LH
(a) Using SST and a hammer, install the No. 1 bearing dust deflector to the rear axle carrier.
SST 09950-70010 (09951-07150), 09951-01000

HINT: Align the hole for the speed sensor in the No. 1 bearing dust deflector with the rear axle carrier.

3. INSTALL REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Engage the spline part of the rear axle carrier to the spline part of the driver shaft assembly.
(b) Using a jack, lift up the rear axle carrier, and align the installation positions of each arm.

NOTICE: Place a wooden block between the jack and rear axle carrier to prevent damage.

4. TEMPORARILY CONNECT REAR SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH (for Coil suspension)
5. TEMPORARILY CONNECT PNEUMATIC CYLINDER WITH REAR SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH (for Air suspension)





6. CONNECT REAR UPPER NO. 1 CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the control arm with a new nut to the axle carrier.
Torque: 160 N*m (1632 kgf*cm, 118 ft.*lbf)





7. CONNECT REAR UPPER NO. 2 CONTROL ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the control arm with a new nut to the axle carrier.
Torque: 160 N*m (1632 kgf*cm, 118 ft.*lbf)





8. CONNECT TOE CONTROL LINK SUB-ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the control link with a new nut to the axle carrier.
Torque: 118 N*m (1203 kgf*cm, 87 ft.*lbf)





9. TEMPORARILY TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Install the stud of the suspension arm, and temporarily install a washer, nut and the bolt to the axle carrier.





(b) Temporarily install the No. 2 suspension arm with the No. 2 suspension toe adjust plate, rear suspension attachment and nut to the suspension member.





10. CONNECT REAR NO. 1 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the suspension arm with a new nut to the axle carrier.
Torque: 118 N*m (1203 kgf*cm, 87 ft.*lbf)
11. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE
12. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER LH
13. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY LH
14. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY LH
15. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET LH
16. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING
17. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN TENSION SPRING
18. CHECK PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION
19. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT
(a) Install a new rear axle shaft nut.
Torque: 290 N*m (2957 kgf*cm, 214 ft.*lbf)
20. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB BEARING LOOSENESS
21. INSPECT REAR AXLE HUB RUNOUT
22. INSTALL REAR DISC
23. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
24. CONNECT SPEED SENSOR REAR LH





25. CONNECT REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Connect the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH with new 2 bolts.
Torque: 86 N*m (877 kgf*cm, 63 ft.*lbf)

NOTICE:
^ Do not twist the flexible hose.
^ Make sure the screw parts are free from foreign matter and are not damaged.
^ Be careful not to overtighten the bolts, as the rear axle carrier is made of aluminum.





26. STAKE REAR AXLE SHAFT LH NUT
(a) Using a chisel and a hammer, stake the axle shaft nut.





27. INSTALL LOAD SENSING VALVE SENSOR BRACKET
(a) Install the load sensing valve sensor bracket to the toe control link sub-assembly with the bolt.
Torque: 3.6 to 6.9 N*m (37 to 70 kgf*cm, 32 to 61 in.*lbf)
28. STABILIZE SUSPENSION (for Coil Suspension)
29. STABILIZE SUSPENSION (for Air Suspension)
30. CONNECT REAR SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH (for Coil suspension)
31. CONNECT PNEUMATIC CYLINDER WITH REAR SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY LH (for Air suspension)





32. CONNECT REAR STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Insert the bolt from the front of the vehicle. Then install the rear stabilizer link assembly LH with the nut.
Torque: 26 N*m (265 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf)





33. TIGHTEN REAR NO. 2 SUSPENSION ARM ASSEMBLY LH
(a) Tighten the nut on the rear suspension member side.
Torque: 150 N*m (1530 kgf*cm, 111 ft.*lbf)





(b) Tighten the nut on the rear axle carrier side.
Torque: 225 N*m (2294 kgf*cm, 166 ft.*lbf)
34. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 140 N*m (1428 kgf*cm, 103 ft.*lbf)
35. PERFORM PARKING BRAKE SHOE BEDDING
(a) Perform parking brake shoe bedding.
36. INSPECT AND ADJUST REAR WHEEL ALIGNMENT
37. CHECK ABS SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL
(a) Check the speed sensor signal.
38. VEHICLE PREPARATION FOR HEADLIGHT AIMING ADJUSTMENT
39. PREPARATION FOR HEADLIGHT AIMING (Using a screen)
40. HEADLIGHT AIMING INSPECTION
41. HEADLIGHT AIMING ADJUSTMENT
