Parking Brake Lever: Service and Repair

PARKING BRAKE LEVER

COMPONENTS:

REMOVAL
1. PRECAUTION

CAUTION: Be sure to read the Restraint Systems; Service Precautions thoroughly before servicing.

2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

CAUTION: Wait for 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable to prevent the airbag working.

3. REMOVE FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY (for Power Seat)
4. REMOVE FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY (for Manual Seat)
5. REMOVE REAR SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY
6. REMOVE FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY
7. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
8. REMOVE REAR DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
9. REMOVE CENTER PILLAR GARNISH LOWER LH
10. REMOVE FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH
11. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSEMBLY
12. REMOVE REAR CONSOLE PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
13. REMOVE FRONT CONSOLE PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
14. REMOVE FRONT ASH RECEPTACLE SUBASSEMBLY
15. REMOVE CONSOLE BOX REGISTER ASSEMBLY
16. REMOVE CONSOLE BOX
17. REMOVE CENTER AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY

18. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR REAR UPPER SUB PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Turn back the floor carpet in order to remove the front floor rear upper sub panel.
b. Disengage the 6 clamps.
c. Remove the 4 bolts and front floor rear upper sub panel.
19. REMOVE FLOOR PANEL BRACE REAR NO. 1
20. REMOVE FRONT CENTER FLOOR BRACE
21. DISCONNECT OXYGEN SENSOR
22. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY
23. REMOVE NO. 1 FRONT FLOOR HEAT INSULATOR
24. REMOVE AIR GUIDE PLATE OUTSIDE RH
25. REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY
26. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

a. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the parking brake return with damper spring.

b. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the 2 No. 2 parking brake cable assemblies from the parking brake equalizer.

c. Slide the rubber boot as shown in the illustration.

d. Remove the parking brake equalizer from the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly.

e. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly.

f. Disconnect the parking brake switch connector.

g. Remove the 2 bolts and parking brake lever.

h. Pull up the parking brake lever claw.
i. Remove the lock nut and No. 1 wire adjusting nut of the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly from the parking brake lever.
j. Remove the clip and No. 1 parking brake cable assembly from the parking brake lever.

INSPECTION

1. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE SWITCH ASSEMBLY
a. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table.

Standard Resistance:

If the value is not as specified, replace the parking brake lever.

INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

a. Pass the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly through the parking brake lever and hold the cable with the clip.
b. Pass the parking brake cable through the lever guide. Temporarily tighten the No. 1 wire adjusting nut and lock nut.

HINT: Fully tighten the No. 1 wire adjusting nut and lock nut when adjusting the parking brake lever free play

c. Fully bend the parking brake lever claw.

d. Install the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly through the floor hole.
e. Install the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.)

f. Install the parking brake lever with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.)

g. Connect the parking brake switch connector.

h. Install the parking brake equalizer to the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly.

i. Slide the rubber boot back as shown in the illustration.

j. Connect the 2 No. 2 parking brake cable assemblies to the parking brake equalizer.
k. Install the parking brake No. 2 and No. 3 cable assemblies with the 2 bolts.
Torque: 6.0 Nm (61 kgf-cm, 53 inch lbs.)

l. Using needle-nose pliers, install the parking brake return with damper spring.
2. INSTALL PROPELLER SHAFT WITH CENTER BEARING ASSEMBLY
3. INSPECT AND ADJUST NO. 2 AND NO. 3 JOINT ANGLE
4. INSTALL OUTSIDE AIR GUIDE PLATE
5. INSTALL NO. 1 FRONT FLOOR HEAT INSULATOR
6. INSTALL FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY
7. INSTALL OXYGEN SENSOR
8. INSTALL FRONT CENTER FLOOR BRACE
9. INSTALL NO. 1 REAR FLOOR PANEL BRACE

10. INSTALL FRONT FLOOR REAR UPPER SUB PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
a. Install the front rear upper sub panel with the 4 bolts.
Torque: 18 Nm (184 kgf-cm, 13 ft. lbs.)
b. Engage the 6 clamps.
11. INSTALL CENTER AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY
12. INSTALL CONSOLE BOX
13. INSTALL CONSOLE BOX REGISTER ASSEMBLY
14. INSTALL FRONT ASH RECEPTACLE SUBASSEMBLY
15. INSTALL FRONT CONSOLE PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
16. INSTALL REAR CONSOLE PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY
17. INSTALL SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSEMBLY
18. INSTALL FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH
19. INSTALL CENTER PILLAR GARNISH LOWER LX
20. INSTALL REAR DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
21. INSTALL FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH
22. INSTALL FRONT SEAT OUTER BELT ASSEMBLY
23. INSTALL REAR SEAT CUSHION ASSEMBLY
24. INSTALL FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY (for Power Seat)
25. INSTALL FRONT SEAT ASSEMBLY (for Manual Seat)
26. INSPECT PARKING BRAKE LEVER TRAVEL
27. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE LEVER TRAVEL
28. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
29. PERFORM INITIALIZATION
30. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT
