Parking Brake Cable: Service and Repair

PARKING BRAKE CABLE

COMPONENTS:

REMOVAL
1. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE LEVER (for Manual Transmission)
2. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE PEDAL (for Automatic Transmission)

3. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY
a. Pull up the parking brake claw.
b. Remove the lock nut and No. 1 wire adjusting nut of the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly from the parking brake.
c. Remove the clip and No. 1 parking brake cable assembly from the parking brake.
4. REMOVE NO. 2 DIFFERENTIAL SUPPORT PROTECTOR
5. REMOVE REAR WHEEL
6. SEPARATE REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
7. REMOVE REAR DISC
8. REMOVE NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING
9. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING
10. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
11. REMOVE NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
12. REMOVE NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
13. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER
14. REMOVE NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY LH
a. Remove the 3 bolts and disengage the 2 clamps and No. 2 parking brake cable assembly LH.

b. Separate the No. 2 parking brake cable assembly LH from the parking brake equalizer.

c. Remove the 2 nuts and No. 2 parking brake cable assembly.

d. Remove the 2 cable support brackets from the No. 2 parking brake cable assembly.

INSTALLATION
1. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY LH

a. Install the 2 cable support brackets to the No. 2 parking brake cable assembly LH.

b. Install the No. 2 parking brake cable assembly LH to the parking brake plate with the 2 nuts.
Torque: 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 inch lbs.)
c. Connect the No. 2 parking brake cable assembly LH to the parking brake equalizer.
d. Install the No. 2 parking brake cable assembly LH to the body with the 3 bolts and 2 clamps.
Torque:
Bolt A 6.0 Nm (61 kgf-cm, 53 inch lbs.)
Bolt B 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.)

2. APPLY HIGH TEMPERATURE GREASE
a. Apply a thin layer of high temperature grease to the area where the parking brake plate contacts the parking brake shoe.
3. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE LEVER
4. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
5. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE ASSEMBLY
6. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE SHOE ADJUSTING SCREW SET
7. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING
8. INSTALL NO. 2 PARKING BRAKE SHOE RETURN SPRING
9. CHECK PARKING BRAKE INSTALLATION
10. INSTALL REAR DISC
11. ADJUST PARKING BRAKE SHOE CLEARANCE
12. INSTALL REAR DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY
13. INSTALL REAR WHEEL
Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)
14. INSTALL NO. 2 DIFFERENTIAL SUPPORT PROTECTOR

15. INSTALL NO. 1 PARKING BRAKE CABLE ASSEMBLY
a. Pass the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly through the parking brake and hold the cable with the clip.

HINT: Fully tighten the No. 1 wire adjusting nut and lock nut when adjusting the parking brake free play.

b. Fully bend the parking brake pedal claw.
16. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE PEDAL (for Automatic Transmission)
17. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE LEVER (for Manual Transmission)
